End of the Year
by Roger Kilgore
It's the end of the year
Let's put it in wraps
We've run fifty races
More than that, perhaps
It's been quite a streak
Four days and four races
We traveled about
To so many places
We started in Boyce
That's close to Winchester
The last one in Winfield
Just south of Westminster
The run down in Boyce
Was a distance prediction
Between three and five
Without hills? that's pure fiction
How far did we run?
Our equations looked funny
You can't beat my luck
I guessed right on the money
We did not really plan
To run again Sunday
But, Chuck Raper asked us
To make it a fun day
Chuck said a five miler
At eight thirty next morning
Up at Harrisburg College
And he'd do the driving
Dee said no thanks
Do you think I'm some bimbo
But changed her mind quick
When she heard Chuck say Limo
Next morning came early
Our trip was quite far
But, it didn't seem bad
Riding in a big car
We all lounged around
It was such Lux-ury
Drinking coffee with snacks
With Suzanne, James, and Dee
Tell me please, how much farther
Let's look at the map
We need to go West
Toward the Cumberland Gap???
Well not quite that far
Just a short mile or three
What looked good on the map
Turned out not to be
We weaved and we bounced
As we came round the bend
The turns were so sharp
Hey, is that our rear end
Despite poor directions
We arrived at the gate
But, the runners were going
We were two minutes late
What the heck, we all cried
We'll run none the less
Started four minutes late
Then gave it our best
Of course it won't count
That's not our intent
But Dee finished first
In the two mile event
After we finished
Took pictures galore
In and out of the Limo
Let me take just one more
If that weren't enough
Chuck had one more surprise
Free lunch down in Frederick
Chicken wings were the prize
We all ate our fill
Twas a wonderful day
When I offered to tip
Chuck said "you can't pay"
Thanks a lot Mr. Raper
I'm sure glad we went
With Red and White socks
You're still quite the gent
