As for Steve, he enjoyed a reasonably good run until the turn-around cone at 2 1/2 miles where Naoko Ishibe, the first woman, flashed past him en route to an overwhelming victory in the women's race. "There was more competition last year," said Naoko, who also won the race in 2001. Heading for Georgia's Peachtree 10k on July 4, Ishibe handily won the 2002 race in 16:54. "The lady is amazing," confessed Olenick the Elder. "I ran as hard as I could and didn't beat her." Happily, Steve did win his 20-29 age group in 17:00.
A tight race did develop between masterwomen Pat Wilkerson and Gloria Santarpia. Trained for speed, Wilkerson went out fast- too fast- and Santarpia caught up with her. But Wilkerson rallied and passed Santarpia near the two mile mark. But their battle didn't end. Santarpia snuck up behind Wilkerson and passed her with a surprise sprint at the finish. Placing third overall (19:39.4), Santarpia claimed an overall award, while fourth-place Wilkerson won the masterwoman title (19:39.8). "She snuck up on me," Ms. Wilkerson admitted. "I didn't know she was there."
In spite of the seasonably warm, sunny morning, a number of Striders established personal record's at Damien's 5k. The PR-setters included Richard Bernstein (19:18), Daniel Jonas (18:39), and Tunde Morakinyo (18:05). Some of her husband's speed may gace rubbed off on her, because Sue Ellen Morakinyo (23:20) set a personal 5k record by nearly a minute. "I beat a 12-year-old!" enthused Sue Ellen, referring to how she held off Junior Strider Melodie Bowler (1st, 10-14 female). After the race, runners enjoyed Ledo Pizza (which went fast), watermelon, fruit, bagels, and juice. Overheated runners could cool down in the spray of a watering hose, and many of them did. The race also featured face-painting, kids-tatoos, live music from the band Thin Air. Damien's Run for Recovery 5k and 2 Mile Walk memorialize the death of Damien Massalla, whose father Ralph directs the event to bring to the community an awareness of drug-related problems of youth. 343 runners completed the 5k, with lesser numbers in the 2 mile walk. Overall winners received cash awards and plaques, while age winners received plaques. Second and third place finishers Mike Styckzynski and Matthew Sanders graciously contributed their winnings to Damien's Recovery Foundation and Teens at Risk.
