DCRRC Bread Run 10K

The second race of the DCRRC Snowball Series. Runners were given the option of supplying home baked bread as their entry fee. Bob and Delabian Rice Thurston have been directing this race for over 20 years.

Bob reports: 46 men and 17 women braved the snow and ice pack to run the 2002 Bread Run. In order to minimize the amount of running on the MacArthur Boulevard Speedway, the course was modified to use only the second half of the regular loop: the runners headed out to Cabin John Bridge, then down the long path (the one that used to have all the steps) to the canal, then downstream to the 5 km point near Lock 6. At that point they turned around to return over all that snow. Most runners said they never could get their footing, a lot recorded Personal Worst times, but most seemed to enjoy the race. One person fell, but it wasn't on the steep hill where we expected a fall. At least one runner, Pierre Donahue who finished in second place, credits the hill for his success: when everyone else slowed down out of caution, Pierre just said what the heck and opened up, picking up 4 or 5 places on the downhill. Afterward everyone enjoyed fresh bread, hot cider and coffee and people could feel they really earned it this time. The organizers want to thank all the folks who baked bread and especially all the volunteers. DCRRC should be proud to have, for a race with 63 participants, more volunteers helping on the course than some of the big races with casts of thousands.
