DCRRC Arlington County Fair Mile

A huge crowd turned out for the 13th more-or-less annual County Fair Miles and Children's Half Mile at the 27th Annual Arlington County Fair at Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington, Virginia. Prizes at the race were gift certificates for dinners, ice cream, crafts, jewelry, t-shirts, and other goodies, donated by vendors at the County Fair. For just $1.00, participants could win up to $15.00 in prizes, with enough prizes for every finishers.

Liz Barnidge walked two blocks to the starting line and outkicked Yuko Takakusaki 6:44 to 6:46 to win the women's mile. The race director, Jay Wind, had invited both candidates for Arlington School Board to compete in the event. Larry Fishtahler had an impressive showing, but his opponent, who also claims to be a runner, failed to show.

Malcolm Lester ran the fastest race of the day, winning the open mile in 5:13.8. Michael Penney came close in the masters' mile, winning in 5:17.4. Ted Poulos was second in both men's races, in 5:29.2 and 5:20.6.

Andrea Oaxaca outkicked Wendall Brown Jr. in the children's half-mile, 2:59.4 to 3:01.6.
