On a lovely fall day, 137 runners enjoyed fresh-baked bread and Delabian and Bob Thurston's legendary warm hospitality at DCRRC's 24th annual Bread Run 10K at Glen Echo Park. This is the second race in the Snowball Series.
The course followed Macarthur Boulevard east for a mile and a half before descending down Maryland Avenue and the spiral ramp to the C&O Canal Towpath. Then after three flat miles on gravel, the course lurched up a 75-foot hill in the last mile.
Where runners often saw snow, this year they saw no hazards worse than occasional puddles. Bethesda's Jason Dwyer took advantage of the perfect conditions to run 34:25, followed by Mike Fox-Boyd, second in 35:43.
Christine Eckstaedt topped the women's race in 41:37, ahead of local girl Bridget Brunnick, second in 43:02.
Bill Osburn, Bethesda's optimistic octogenarian, took a head start and walked in at 1 hour, 35 minutes clock time. Volunteers included Norm Brand, Bill Brogan, Chuck Evans, Lee Glassco, and Sharon Good.
Age-group winners earned loaves of home-baked bread.
