Run For JJ 5K
Rehoboth, DE
Sunday, August 20, 2000
Conducted by Seashore Striders

The third annual Run For J.J. Memorial 5k, in memory of the late J.J. Stein, attracted a field of 213 participants on Sunday morning by Lake Gerer in Rehoboth Beach.

The event always draws a large crowd to support a great cause, as the proceeds will go into the J.J. Stein Foundation that has been established. In addition, this event has the reputation of presenting the best post-race awards in the series as Jay and Diane Stein choose special gifts from Stuart Kingston Galleries for the Overall and Master Champions.

Rehoboth Lifeguard, Kevin Danahy, easily captured the men's title on the new 5k course that looped Henlopen Acres in a time of 15:41 and was presented with a gift from Italy and a check for $1000 to go toward his Ironman sponsorship in October.

Mary Beth Ellis also defended her title as she won in a time of 18:16, over two minutes ahead of the next female finisher. Ellis was presented with pearl earrings for her win. Brent Ayer won the Master Championship in 17:52 and flew back to Frederick, Md. on a shiny silk rug made from India. Triathlete Ginny Hitz won the female Masters in a time of 21:25 and didn't have far to fly on her new silk rug as she lives part-time on Henlopen Avenue.

Following the race, the runners gathered at Lake Gerer for the awards ceremony and were treated to a free post-race breakfast courtesy of the Stein family. A personal chief served eggs to order, as well as bagels from It's a Wonderful Loaf, fresh fruit, and orange juice to complete the morning. Special thanks to Chuck Snyder and the city of Rehoboth for their support, as well as the sponsors, volunteers, and the Seashore Striders. A successful, unique event that runners definitely enjoyed and will remember for a long time.
