The most difficult trick of timing this January 1 may not have been rolling the digital clocks over from 1999 to 2000. For the 113 runners at the Howard County Striders Resolution 8k, the most difficult timing feat was finishing the appointed distance at exactly 11 am - without benefit of any timing devices. In spite of being up late the evening before, most runners finished amazingly close to the appointed hour, and 26 of them completed the 8 km (or 4.97 miles) within plus or minus 20 seconds of 11 am. Mike Bosch of Pasadena, MD, proved the most accurate, crossing the finish line only 0.13 seconds before the hour. (Curiously, his bib number was 1013.) Mike credited his success to "feeling bad and being out of shape" as well as stopping to tie his shoes. For his incredible temporal precision, Mr. Bosch won an engraved Danbury desk clock and a Muggsy the Millenium Mutt stuffed dog.
Race director Dave Tripp offered two other awards. For finishing the farthest from 11 am (nearly 22 minutes!), Mary Beth Soverns earned a talking Christmas wreath. For being the first to submit the correct answers (in writing) to a seven-question "quiz," Nancy Burns won a second Millenium Mutt and 2000 pennies. "I'm donating them to UNICEF," she quipped.
Dave and Judy Tripp have staged the Resolution Run on January 1 for "at least the last 20 years." Unlike most millenium events, the 2000 version of the Resolution Run actually outdrew the 1999 version - by 8 participants. The field included a wide variety of runners, ranging from 9-minute-a-mile "Penguin Pacers" to the Maryland Class 3A State Cross Country Team from River Hill. All of them gathered after the event at the Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center for cider, orange juice, fruits, and 10 dozen Dunkin' Donuts.
