It was hot, and it was humid. But the weather did not deter 59 hearty souls from
showing up to run the Bon Air Park 5 km race in Arlington, VA on Thursday, July
29th. The race also served as the 7th of the 8 races making up the 1999 Bunion Derby
series. The race began and finished in Bon Air Park, in the shadow of a lovingly
maintained rose garden; and the course took the runners out and back over gently
undulating bike trails. Among the men, the indefatigable Ted Poulos, 37, captured
first place in a time of 16:51, followed by Craig Chasse, 27, in 17:00 and Doug
Kuderna, 38, in 17:21; the first male masters finisher was Robert Rodriguez, 43, who
completed the course in 18:39. Of the 12 women who finished the race, the ever-
cheerful Susan Rizzieri, 32, took first place in a time of 19:56, followed by Eliza
Savage, 34, in 21:04 and Emily Weeks, 20, in 21:42; the ever-present Roseann
Neatrour, 42, was first among the female masters runners in a time of 24:59. Many
thanks to the following volunteers who helped Gary Guenther direct the race: John,
David, and Abigail Churchman, Rebecca Guenther, Gary Sidor, Anne Gwynn and her
friend Terri, Richard Diefenbeck, and Joe (I'm sorry but I cannot remember his last
