In a miserable combination of rain and snow with temperatures hovering near the freezing mark, a stalwart band of 116 runners completed the demanding 10 or 20 mile Greenbelt course. In the 20 miler, Merrill Hausenfluck led the way in 2:02:54. Paul Peterson was second and first master in 2:07:12 with Dante Ciolfi close on his heels at 2:07:18.
In the women's race, Rebecca Strode won both overall and Master1s title in a time of 2:28:40. This shattered the master1s woman course record of 2:30:49 set in 1988 by Mary Ann Zuckerman. Betty Blank was second in 2:43:54, followed by Debbie Margraff in 2:59:33.
In the 10 mile race, Gregory Cauller dropped by from Litiz, Pa. to claim the title in 55:48. Eron Ferriera was second in 57:22 with Dan Wallace third in 58:43. Ed Ryan led the Master's men in a time of 64:42.
In the women's race, former Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt) High School cross country runner, Denise Knickman, won in 65:45. Right behind Denise was Vicki Boyer in 66:21 followed by Jodi Heikkinen in 68:43. Susan Humpries copped the Master1s prize with a time of 71:33.
Many thanks to the volunteers who braved the adverse conditions for so many hours: Larry Noel, Pat Brown, James Scarborough, Joe Greene, Jimmy White, Rolland Elliot, John Noel, Larry Dickerson, John Gorman, Roger Burkhart, Norm Brand, Bob Platt, Dan Gardner, Bill Brogan and Frank Gignac (and anyone I forgot or don't know about). Special thanks go to Pud Reaver and the Laurel Radio Club crew who covered the course and enabled course logistics and changes to smoothly flow. Thanks also to the City of Greenbelt Recreation staff who again provided us with an excellent race headquarters, and to the US Department of Agriculture for allowing us to conduct the race on their beautiful rolling hills so well liked by the runners!
The 20 Mile race is the DCRRC 20 Mile Championship and is the third race in DCRRC's Snowball Series.
The full results of both races follow (some times may be slightly off
due to the difficulties brought on by the wet conditions.)
