Open Women

Jingle All the Way 8K 27:22, 10K = 34:45

The open division swelled to the largest number for any division ever with 70 qualifiers as women in running continues getting more and more competitive. A number of the top runners this winter were new faces to the area. Fifteen of the racers had an equivalent of a sub 6:00 pace for a 10K as their best race. Former champ Claire Hallissey won the GW Birthday Classic 10K in 35:34, more than two minutes ahead of top submaster Barb Fallon Wallace that only gets her fourth in the division. Fallon Wallace had her best race at the Jingle All the Way 8K in 28:35 to take ninth in the division; Hallissey was two runners ahead of her in 28:28.

Ten runners and four former champs also had sub 6:00 pace races but only scored one race for the winter. Third place Rachel Ward was three for three, winning all of her races. She started the year with an overall at the CTC New Year's 5K in 17:04 ahead of everyone runner, man or women. She ended the period with the second fastest 8K of the period winning Martha Jefferson in 28:21.

Wayinshet Abebe got her winter over with in the first four days of the period and then was gone. She won it all at the King of the Road 5K in 17:26. Then on Thanksgiving she finishes second at the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K to take the runner-up with a fine 17:00 flat. Mindy Sullivan tucked in behind her by six seconds to take fifth in the division, adding a runner-up at the New Year’s Eve Fairfax 4 Mile in 22:36.

The winter champion Susanna Sullivan started modestly winning the Herndon Turkey Trot 5K in 17:39. Her real race came on the holiday winning her age group at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile in 27:40. She capped the season winning the Run Your Heart Out 5K in 17:03 ahead of seventh place Peggy Yetman. Yetman matched her top masters 5K to the second in 17:49. But what earned her that spot ahead of second master Perry Shoemaker was her win at the Reston 10 Mile in 60:45. Eleventh place Shoemaker was the second women there in 60:47.

Sixth place Renee High had an identical equivalent to Yetman at the Virginia is for Lovers 14K in 52:07 just two seconds ahead of eighth place Kristen Lawrence. High, who has been champion more than once, had already earned her spot with the fastest ten miler of the winter, winning the Surf ‘N’ Santa in 59:34. Twelfth place Mina Demarco was not far from the mix finishing the Virginia is for Lovers 14K in 52:37. Karen Terry takes the tenth spot winning the St. Kateri's Run with the Son 5K in 17:30.

The division seventy qualifiers.

19 & Younger Women

Drumstick Dash 5K 17:25, 10K = 36:16

Natalie Young ended 2012 with a very nice 19:03 at the Festival of Lights. That would have made the division really tight as Amber Hawkins ran the Run for a Rose 5K in 19:05 and Madeline Hermsmeier won it all at the Boars Head Turkey Trot 5K in 19:07. Young glided to an overall win herself on an indoor track in a modest 19:50. Though Hermsmeier was again slightly slower in 19:28 when she won it all at the Monticello 5K versus Hawkins’ 19:18 at the FCPRD 5K, she gets the lean because she had two overall wins, one a major race. Then with little more than a week in the period Young erupted at the Have a Heart for Hoffman 5K in 18:15 to claim the title.

Rachel Rabbit had one of the two races not a 5K in the top eleven. She takes number four racing the Busch Gardens Christmas Town Dash 8K in 31:35 as runner-up. Former champion Avery Cunningham is next racing the other exception at the Cold Turkey 10K, also a runner-up, in 40:40.

Forty-two runners qualified for the division.

35-39 Women

Jingle All the Way 8K 28:35, 10K = 36:18

Last winter’s champion Lisa Thomas was not herself as she started the season off more than two minutes slower at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile and then she was gone. This year’s champion went the other way. Barb Fallon Wallace only improved by a second at her GW Birthday Classic 10K to 37:27 but she cremated her other two races. The 10K would have earned her the title but she knocked a minute off the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile to finish in 28:56. Then she powered her way even faster at the Jingle All the Way 8K to 28:35.

Fourth place Judy Chen started with a solid 41:44 that was just ahead of Melissa Rittenhouse’s Jingle Bell 5K in 20:04. The edge probably would have gone to her because she was the overall winner. In the mix, Vicky Jasparro had already boasted a YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 19:05 and a MCM Turkey Trot 10K overall win in 39:24 in the first week. Chen ran a fine TCS Annapolis HM in 1:26:31 for her second effort but it was not quite enough to pull away from Jasparro who add a 1:26:37 at the Blue Gray HM a week later. Late in January Rittenhouse cruised past both of them to the runner-up spot finishing third overall at the Frostbit 15K in 59:37.

Fifth place Sara Perez ran the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail HM in 1:27:12 just ahead of three swift 5Ks by Tatitana Sheptock.

Twenty-four runners qualified for the division.

Reston 10 Mile 1:00:15, 10K = 36:12

You have to be tough to race in the masters division. Of the top sixteen times in the division only twice was the runner worse than third overall. In both cases it was fourth place Kristi Markowicz. She ran in the two biggest races of the winter. At the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M, the 4th most competitive, she ran 30:52. Then she ran the largest race and the 5th most competitive, the Jungle all the Way 8K in 31:05.

Third place Brenda Schrank had an overall eight overall wins out of eight races. Just started with her worst race in 19:01 at the Run through History 5K and improved all season to end in 18:25 in her final race. Fifth place Mary Davison edged Yoko England as top master at the Virginia is for Lovers 14K in 57:11. England ran the Sentara Colonial Half Marathon in 1:28:22. But Davison also finished third overall at the BRATS New Year's Resolution 5K in 19:14 and was not even close to the top master. That was Peggy Yetman who dominated with her first 17:49. Her second 17:49 a month later at the Run Your Heart Out 5K for second overall.

Perry Shoemaker was working hard, starting the year with swift 5Ks, including a second overall at the Run with Santa 5K in 18:09. She knew the crown would only come if she could catch Yetman. She had experience there finishing second overall more than once against Yetman. On the final Sunday they ran away from the field at the Reston 10 Mile. Yetman was always in sight but she would not be caught and she takes the crown winning 60:15 to 60:47.

Twenty-five runners qualified for the division.

Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K 18:41, 10K = 38:54

Alisa Harvey led the way again; this time ahead of 44 other qualifiers. It was a near carbon copy as she began the first week at the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K, one second faster than last year’s 18:42. That same Thanksgiving morn Lisa McNichols made herself known with an excellent 30:58. In December she would run the Jingle all the Way 8K in 31:43 to clamp down on the runner-up spot.

Third place Robyn Humphrey ran the rolling Celtic Solstice 5 Mile in 32:40 but her best race was the TCS Annapolis HM in 1:28:53. Harvey started the first week of the New Year as second overall at the BRATS New Year's Resolution 5K in 18:45.

In Montgomery County Paula Pels improved on her YMCA Turkey Chase 10K in 42:37 to finish as runner-up at the DCRRC Al Lewis 10 Mile in 1:09:15. Maureen Hall is back racing fast times again and takes fifth at the Hagerstown Turkey Trot 5K in 20:11.

Seventh place Connie Glueck had seven age group wins, topping it off with a fast Menchville Winter Chill 5K in 20:29. However, she was nudged back by sixth place Debbie McLaughlin who won head-to head twice, first at the Governor’s Land 5K in 20:26 and later when she won it all at the Toano 8K in 34:16.

Forty-five women qualified for the division.

Reston 10 Mile 1:06:46, 10K = 40:07

Always a prolific division and yet with forty-two qualifiers there were only two real big guns this winter. Many times one of these grandmasters finished in the top three overall, often as the overall winner. Cindy Conant ran three ten milers getting better each time. She started the winter at the hilly Turkey Burnoff in 1:09:32 and that was golden till the New Year started. Then Deedee Loughran bolted to the front with the fastest 5K in 20:04. That was barely enough to pass Linda Foley’s 20:07 in Arlington. That was good to hold back fourth place Winn Persina. Persina ran the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile in 33:28 but was more impressive racing the DCRRC Burke Lake 12K in 51:55 for second overall.

In January Conant took third at the MCRRC Shooting Starr 6K. Then she upped the ante winning it all at the Country Run 5 Mile in 32:19. That course is hilly but not like the RRCA Challenge that she ran two weeks later in 1:06:57. With five of the top six times she seemed cleared for coronation. Then on the final weekend Loughran snatched it away with a slightly fast Reston 10 Mile in 1:06:46.

Pamela Lovett earned the fifth spot finishing second overall at the Blue Gray 5K in 20:47 just a few ticks ahead of Kendall Tata’s Amnesty 5K in 20:51.

Forty-two women qualified for the division.

Menchville Winter Chill 5K 19:54, 10K = 41:26

When Mercedes Castillo-D’Amico aged up in December she was an instant favorite to take the division. She bolted to the fastest time in the division since last winter’s champion Alison Suckling had run 41:39 at Pike’s Peek in April 2012. Her 20:11 at the Sentara Sleighbell 5K augured the beginning of the end for the competition. In January, she torched the field as the overall winner at the Menchville Winter Chill 5K in 19:54. She ended the period with a second overall victory at the Fort Eustis 10K in 41:53. She is not the oldest runner ever with an overall win but she is the oldest with two in the same period.

Suckling only lightly raced but her AS Anniversary 15K in 1:08:04 was good enough for third in the division. Another newcomer to the division, Dorothy Beckett, débuted in second place with a very nice Celtic Solstice 5 Mile in 34:45. In late February she pounced on the field winning at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile hill trainer in 1:15:04. Ofelia Perotti returns to prominence with age group wins at four different distances, led by the challenging roller coaster dubbed the Love the Run You're with 5K in 21:44.

Oft times division champion Betty Blank says so long to the division taking fifth in the division. Just days before turning sixty she had an overall win at the By George 5K. It was only her seventh fastest race.

Thirty-one runners made the division.

VAB Turkey Trot 10K 47:32

The division grew 50% to 38 qualifiers with Barbara Mathewson again leading the way. She slowed by 36 seconds at the VAB Turkey Trot 10K to 47:32. In Bethesda, Alice Franks was also on her second race of the winter racing the hills of the YMCA Turkey Chase 10K in 48:23 for her second of ten age group wins. She started the second day of the period running the King of the Road 5K in 23:24. Mathewson geared up the day before that at the Governor’s Land 5K in 23:09. The following Saturday, the prolific one, Franks added the first of her three ten milers with a very nice 1:21:47 at the Turkey Burnoff.

Dru Sexton bolted into contention for the third spot with an excellent Star City Half Marathon in 1:50:29 but she never produced another race anywhere near that. Linda Gulick was a lot more consistent as edged past her with a victory at the Toy for Tots Run 5K in 23:56. Maria Shields takes fifth place with AS Anniversary 15K in 1:17:35, just ahead of Kathleen Webster who ran the Fort Eustis 10K in 50:43.

VAB Turkey Trot 10K 50:51

The division settled down from its monster 30 runners in 2012 to a more practical 19. Dee Nelson, 69, is closing in on 2,000 lifetime races but her desire for a win is still as strong as ever. She won all 11 of her races having her best race of the first day of the period at the Way Station's Thanksgiving Day 5K in 25:17. Even if she had run 30 seconds faster as in 2012, she would still have settled for runner-up. That same morning in Virginia Beach the winter champion Betty Brothers was besting fourth place Claudia Crawford at the VAB Turkey Trot 10K 50:51 to 54:01.

Ann Hirn had started the winter at the fast Governor’s Land 5K course in 25:23 which got her third in the division. She finished behind 70-year-old Joan Coven’s 25:04. It looks as if there will be a real battle in the senior division when Nelson turns 70 in September.

Governor's Land 5K 25:04, 10K = 52:11

Nobody is going to touch Joan Coven. The state record keeper has his eyes on her every time she races. She dominated the division with a swift 25:04 at the Governor’s Land 5K, edging closer to the sub 8:00 pace. Ecris Williams, 73, is still improving with all four of her races faster than the winter before. She had the fastest 10 miler in March at Reston to end the period. Her best race was the Run Your Heart Out 5K in 28:56 for her second race of that weekend.

Mary Kate Berglund wrapped up the runner-up spot with 25 days still left before Christmas. Her Jingle Bell 5K for Arthritis in 28:23 would have been insurmountable before Coven. She book ended the period racing the Holton Hustle 5K in 28:31.

Sweethearts 4 Ever 4 Mile Run 41:33, 10K = 1:06:31

Janet Hughes aged up and promptly won all seven of her races. Not so fast, defending champion Tami Graf won all nine of her races and these two pulled away from their rivals. Graf had the top time racing the Sweethearts 4 Ever 4 Mile Run in 41:33. She sharpened her speed work with a lot of shorter races at the annual winter indoor track meets. Hughes did all her work at the Shenandoah Valley Winter race series. By the end of February she closed on Graf, racing the Lose Your Shoes & the Shirt off Your Back 5K in 32:25.
