Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 33:13

Women’s participation continues exploding exponentially, blasting through the roof with 103 qualifiers. Much of the times were based on head-to-head as these elite racers flocked to all the big races. The fleet athletes boasted 86 times raced faster than a 6:00 pace. Finishing third at the potent St. Patrick's Day 8K was not fast enough to make the top twenty.

Claire Hallissey won that race as the first of six races she won. It would have earned her seventh place. Her best race at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M was her only non-win and yet her fastest race. Her time of 55:51 was just enough to take the runner-up spot. The other six times in the top seven were at the two big 10Ks in April. Former champion Hirut Mandefro had a top time at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 33:41, followed closely by fourth place Yinunlish Delelecha, who ran 34:07.

The following week settled the rest of the top five at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K. Mandefro speed away to the title with a swift 33:13. Olga Romanova improved on her Ukrops 10K in 34:35 to 33:32 at the pike. That was almost enough gusto to tie up with Hallissey who won the Apple Blossom 10K in 34:35. In Rockville Delelecha confirmed her spot with 33:44 just three seconds ahead of fifth place Waynishe Abebe. Abebe also was third at the Apple Blossom in 35:24.

The second half of the top ten was more of the same. Seventh place Susanna Sullivan was fourth at the Anthem Half Marathon in 1:16:31 just behind Delelecha’s 1:16:09. Former champion Tezata Dengarsa won it all at the Yeungling Shamrock Marathon in 2:49:39 but it was only her fourth best race. As with nearly everyone she earned her spot, sixth, with a jaunt down the pike in 34:27. The last three places were led by Sallie Ford’s 34:36 photo finish. Ninth place Lindsay O’Brien (34:37) had been beaten earlier at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M by tenth place Christine Ramsey (34:40) by time but not by place. Ramsey was 12th with a time of 59:26 while O’Brien was 9th in a tightly battle race with 59:20.

19 & Younger Women

Westchester Shamrock 5K 16:44, 10K = 34:50

Winning it all at a major sized race just about guarantees a title. When Brin Strouse had that as the fastest and third fastest races the decision was easily made. Her first race winning the Clarksburg 5K in 18:55 was her best. Still runner-up Meghan Blackstone was right on her heels running the Run for Haiti 5K in 19:00 in March. The final day of the period she ran an excellent Capitol Hill Classic 10K in 40:34, the fastest of the season among qualifiers.

The next two spots were highly contested. Kaitlyn Govatos won it all to open the spring at the B & A Trail Half Marathon in 1:28:59, seventh runner and well ahead of fifth women Avery Cunningham’s 1:34:23. At the Cherry Pit 10M, the other Cherry race held the first week of April, Cunningham redeemed herself edging Govatos 1:06:44 to 1:07:00. That was more than two minutes faster than last year. Her equivalent time (40:06) was barely ahead of Govatos’ (40:13) best race. Govatos earned the higher spot, third, with the overall win and that both her races, (40:16) for the 10M, were so consistent.

Gillian Livingston takes fifth running the Thomas Jefferson PI Miler in 19:27, while sixth place Casey Barr came in next behind Strouse at the Frederick Twilight 5K 19:09 to 19:35.

In all, 35 women made the rankings.

35-39 Women

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 35:12

The same four runners finished in top four as last year. Lisa Thomas began the spring with a solid Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:26:52 but it was already too late to retain her crown. Barb Fallon Wallace had finished fourth overall at the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 28:43 and never looked back. When she was done even Thomas’ George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:04:05 was not enough to stop her from having the top five times in the division. She had three overall wins in the 5K, topped off by an age group win at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 35:12.

Jackie Gruendal was in Alexandria at the same time as Thomas, choosing to win the 5K in a solid 18:48 to take third place. Sixth in a deep field at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, Danielle Kays repeated her fourth place position racing home in 1:05:21.

The next three were razor’s close. Cristina Burbach tried her hand at the marathon, winning the Yeungling Shamrock in 3:08:58 and still having enough gas to take second at Pike’s Peek in 39:20 good for sixth in the division. Fifth place Tatiana Sheptock matched time with a third overall at the Run for Haiti 5K in 18:54. She added a 31:28 for second overall at the Rockstar 8K. Kate Gardner flew home at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 39:25 for seventh place.

40-44 Women

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 58:47, 10K = 35:20

Two big races usually decide the division. This year was no different as the top two runners from last spring reversed positions. Peggy Yetman ran the fastest 5K of the year at the Lucky Leprechaun 5K, winning it all in 17:47. She let it all loose at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, knocking more than a minute and a half off 2012 to take the title in 58:47.

Meanwhile Elena Orlova handily won the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 35:41. That would have done it for her last year when she blasted the division with 34:26. This year she earned the runner-up spot. She had another fine Apple Blossom 10K in 36:22 but eschewed racing the half marathon the next day as with last year. She choose instead to win it all at the Germantown 5M in 29:30 to end the spring.

Kelly Westlake takes third finishing behind Orlova in Rockville at 37:07. That was after she came home second behind Yetman in the ten miler with 1:02:25. Right behind her is Brenda Schrank in 1:02:36. Schrank ran next behind Orlova at the Apple Blossom 10K in 38:02. Perhaps her best race was an overall win (both sexes) at the Andrew Air Force HM in 1:24:10.

The next three finished in rapid succession. Yoko England takes fifth at the Dismal Swamp Stomp HM in 1:26:59. Next in line, Kristi Markowicz wins at the other big ten miler, George Washington Parkway Classic, in 1:05:31. Third place at Pike’s Peek in 39:25 makes Mary Davison the seventh runner in a field of 43 qualifiers.

45-49 Women

Yeungling Shamrock Festival Marathon 3:02:09, 10K = 38:56

Usually the spring season starts with Alisa Harvey racing down Rockville Pike for the title. This year she decided to speed some more time at the track. Four of the top five finishers at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K did not have a second race. Second place Karen Faber’s race was only good enough for 19th place in the division. To be fair Darcy Strouse won there in her only race with a sparkling 39:27 to match this year’s champion exactly.

The battle moved over to the other likely title maker, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. It produced four of the top six runners. Robyn Humphrey ran away from the field with an excellent 1:05:39 victory. Lane Tingle was third there in 1:07:33 to take the runner-up spot. Third place goes to Paula Pels who was fifth there in 1:08:39. Next to return back to the Washington Monument, Mandana Mortazavi was sixth in the division with 1:10:53.

Three of the top six women used a half marathon. Humphrey added a sweet Clyde’s 10K in 40:42 to leave no doubt but Tingle’s Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:30:50 had her leading till that fateful April day of the Cherry Blossom. Keary Johnston won it all at the Tiger trot 5K in 19:59. She would need that to help parse her apart from Deb Taylor. Taylor’s Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon in 1:33:15 the next day was just behind Johnston’s Frederick Half Marathon in 1:33:11 to start May.

Maureen Hall gets the seventh spot with seven age group wins in this monster division of sixty-four qualifiers. Hall was in the top three in five races winning three of them out right.

50-54 Women

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 38:45

The division settled back to a mortal 41 qualifiers. The top four women have all been title holders. Cindy Conant seems to get better every year. She needs to. She opened the season with a superb Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:28:47 but Martha Merz had already sent fourth place Leisa Villani back to the showers as third master at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon 1:28:26 to 1:30:53.

Conant already had an excellent St. Patrick's Day 8K in 31:09 to build her confidence for her next race in DC. The first week in April means the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. Merz was third there in 1:06:45 just behind Conant’s second place finish there last year. Conant elevated to a fine 1:06:07, again finishing second. Last year it was Joan Benoit world record in 1:00:52. This year another out-of-towner, Nina Caron, produced the second fastest time ever with 1:01:48.

Still she had not put away the division. It would all come down the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K. Last year she won the division with 39:45. Merz ran 39:47 to take third place. Runner-up Deedee Loughran would only have two races but her 39:17 here was a doozy. It got her nearly close enough to the speeding Conant to see her 38:45 finish.

Bull Island 4M 25:27, 10K = 41:37

Forty-three runners swamped the huge division but Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico was in total command. She had seven of the top eight times and was the overall winner in five of her eight races. Wow! Note that her best race at the Bull Island 4M in 25:27 was just two seconds ahead of last spring’s champion Alison Suckling. Betty Blank is now sixty and when she gets off her spring injury she plans to take over the title vacated by Alice Franks who age up in May.

Castillo-D'Amico nearly made the open division winning it all at the Walsingham 5K in 20:01 and added a sparkling win at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K with 42:27. But that was not the fastest 10K this spring. After finishing second at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:12:36, Dorothy Beckett let it all hang out winning a landslide by more than a minute at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 42:21.

Carole Jones makes her case for third place at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:14:22. Back in March she became the third women in the division to break 22:00, faster than the standard for the 40-44 division, at the 5K. On the last weekend Ofelia Perotti joined the party with an excellent Semper Fi 5K in 21:35 to take fourth place.

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 46:49

The division grew to an impressive 39 qualifiers to watch Alice Franks win her last crown. She struggled early finishing the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 39:47 and the rolling hills at the Piece of Cake 10K granted her only a 50:57. These two races would have left her just ahead of sixth place Linda Mills who would run the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:24:57 but Franks had already rebounded winning that race in 1:20:47. That was easily enough to take the crown ahead of two newcomers with sub 50:00 10Ks.

Fourth place went to Linda Gulick for her win at the Henrico Celebration 5K in 23:51. Penny Williams was just ahead of her run the Oxford day 10K in 49:21. As with Franks, runner-up Debbie Trainer started the season with a slow half marathon. Trainer had a very nice Carytown 10K in 49:11. Franks added icing to the cake trashing the field at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K with 46:49.

65-69 Women

Germantown 5 Miler 37:56, 10K = 47:50

Alice Franks was up for trying for the vaunted double as she aged up in early May. She won her division (at 64) at St. Patrick’s Day 8K in 39:47 which was just ahead of 65-69 age group winner Nancy Avitabile’s 39:55. Avitabile would have won the 60-69 division as her net time was just ahead of Frank’s. In April both runner’s won their division at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. It was Avitabile’s best effort in 1:23:50. Neither of those raced helped Frank’s in the new division. For that she went long winning the Potomac River Run Half Marathon in 1:46:03 and the Germantown 5 Miler in 37:56 and the division now belongs to her.

Former champion of many seasons, Dee Nelson, has one more ranking period before she becomes 70. She was third behind Linda Kearney at the ten miler 1:27:16 to 1:26:27 and was looking at falling to sixth place, her lowest ranking ever. That same morning Betty Brothers had run the Run for the Animals Half Marathon in 1:53:52 and later in the first week of May Larue Lennon bolted to past them all at the Frederick Half Marathon in 1:52:54.

Then in mid April Nelson rebounded to win at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 50:47 ahead of Kearney’s 53:25 and glided smoothly into third place. Franks tore it up at that race but again she was too young then to matter in this division.

Run the D. O. G. 5K 25:25, 10K = 52:55

Joan Coven stepped up her production of 25 minutes 5Ks with two faster than last spring. She secured her title in early March with a splendid 2:03:00 at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon. Then returned back home to win the Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 25:25.

Runner-up Mary Kate Berglund had two sub hour 10Ks including a fine Apple Blossom in 58:56. She added three 5Ks in the low 28s. Her best was in 28:17. Ecris Williams looked good early for third place with low 29s in the 5K and the fastest 10 miler in the division, running Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:40:23. That was just ahead of fifth place Nancy Linck’s 1:42:00. Then Ellen Hocheder joined the division with a 29 flat 5K to match the 10 miler. The next week she improved to 28:33 at the Packard Center Fiesta 5K to take home third place.

Hughes ran the Apple Blossom 10K in 1:08:25.
