New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K 16:22, 10K = 34:05

The division finally subsided to a manageable 64 qualifiers, including 20 who clawed their way in from other divisions. Wayinshet Abebe was marvelous winning two of her four races with a nod for the fastest time at the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 16:22. But the season’s best has to go to Claire Hallissey.

Hallissey motored over top of everyone winning 14 of her fifteen races. Three times she finished ahead of the top male as well. Her best effort was the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 34:35 ahead of third place Susanna Sullivan (34:50) and runner-up Abebe (36:07). Abebe gets the nod because Sullivan’s only other race, an overall win at the Crimes Solvers 5K in 17:30, was slower than all four of Abebe’s races. Abebe ran the Reston Firecracker 5K in 17:00.

Hallissey also topped Abebe at the Crystal City Twilight 5K 16:46 to 17:08, She also won the Annapolis 10 mile in 57:48. Her only non-win was at the stacked international field of the Abebe Bikila 5K where she finished fifth overall in 16:38. Fourth place Kristin Anderson finished right behind Abebe at Reston in 17:03 and then won the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler in 22:10. Fifth place Renee High won it all at 4 of her five races but after her Elizabeth River Run 10K victory in 35:34 she was off her normal game.

Sixth place Meg Digregorio won six off her ten races but after the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 17:13 her closest race was a minute slower at the Bel Air Town Run 5K. Seventh place Gina Slaby débuted with two overall wins including a fine 17:23 at the Smart Smiles 5K. Next in line, Carmen Graves won her two 5Ks as well coasting in at 17:17 at the Fab 5K. Sallie Ford finished next in that race in 17:38 and kept it close with a 22:49 at the season ending Charlottesville 4M. Barb Fallon Wallace slips between the two of them for ninth place with her Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 36:35.

Lauren Brady was fifteenth last summer but broke free at the Kiwanis Club Independence Day 5K to win it all in 19:40. That had her closing in on Michaela Peterson who ran the swift Purple Strides 5K in 19:241 to take fourth in the division. Fifth place Avery Cunningham was also ahead of her then at her own Kiwanis race the Team Surlis 10K Challenge in 40:44.

Erica Dobbs crept up week after week in July at the Cul de Sac races from 19:35 to 19:31 before surging to the crown at the Pony Pasture 5K in 18:33. Third place Krista Willard knocked two minutes of her July 4th race to finish there in 19:08. On the final weekend Brady knifed between the two to capture the runner-up spot at Charlottesville with her 4-mile race in 24:52.

Nicole Dawson was sixth among the 53 qualifiers winning at the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in 19:42.

35-39 Women

Charlottesville 4 Miler 22:27, 10K = 35:57

Barb Fallon Wallace began her summer with her traditional win at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 36:35. Now she would need only one more qualifier for the title. She chose to win it all on her nation’s birthday celebration at the Let Freedom Run 5K in 17:38.

The race for the runner-up was ultra close with Sherry Stick finishing second overall at the Casey Cases 5K in 17:52. Six days and one second later Amy Blanco won it all at the Donut Alley Rally 5K. Blanco won all three of her races with her second best being the Run through History 10K in 38:44. Stick, no stranger to overall wins, won six times in her eight races with six of her races faster than Blanco’s 10K, including a win at the Mission Possible 5K in 17:55.

Tatiana Sheptock bested Melissa Rittenhouse at the Leesburg 20K 1:19:51 to 1:21:03 to take fourth position.

40-44 Women

New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K 16:37, 10K = 34:36

Regular top finisher Elena Orlova raced the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 16:37 and disappeared along with three others from last summer’s top seven. The division shrank by a third to just 24 qualifiers. Speaking of which, Brenda Schrank moved up four places. She slowed somewhat from last year at the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon to 1:28:57. However, she still owns Winchester winning the Liberty 5K in 19:00. That was 34 seconds faster than Kristi Markowicz ran the that same day at the Let Freedom Run 5K but Markowicz had already litigated her runner-up spot by winning the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 39:15.

Just like her namesake, Perry Shoemaker knew it was time to make her move and in mid August she jockeyed for position at the Leesburg 5K in 19:04. The following week she ran for daylight and bolted to the finish line as the winner of the Southlakes 10K in 38:37 and the division title.

Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler 31:03, 10K = 39:09

Times can be confusing sometimes as runner-up Denise Knickman raced the New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 18:49 ahead of fifth place Maureen Hall (19:17). Hall’s time puts her right behind third place Alisa Harvey who ran the decidedly rolling Let Freedom Run 5K in 19:08 before winning it all on Bastille Day at the PRR Birthday Bash 5K in 19:15.

Knickman had opened the season running the McVets 5K in 20:06 but remember this special event also has a 10K as per usual Knickman ran, and won top masters, at both. Thus, it is no surprise that her 42:42 in the 10K is slower than her Too Hot to Trot 10K in August with 40:43. That being said, Hall, who has been on a tear in 2013, ran nine other races. Her next best was the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in 20:56. This made it hard to choose because Robyn Humphrey’s inaugural Charles Street 12M in 1:22:19 was pretty far behind Hall’s 5K but Humphrey bested her at Damian’s with 20:07. Historically Humphrey has won their head-to-head matches and the BWC’s results seemed off.

Susan Graham-Grey was top master at the Run through History 10K in 40:56 and then in mid August shut the door to discussion winning the Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler outright in 31:03 to take the division crown. Hall finished three and half minutes later. Keary Johnson was sixth of the 43 qualifiers with her FSC WDF 5K in 20:01.

Purple Strides 5K 18:58, 10K = 39:29

Last year Linda Foley won the division by besting Cindy Conant and DeeDee Loughran head-to-head. This year she raced just once and might not have cracked the top ten. Loughran would have won the division with her exquisite Leesburg 20K in 1:22:38 but she had a birthday first and moved up. Instead she took the runner-up with a couple of Reston 5Ks, best at the WDF in 19:31 for second overall.

Conant (19:39) watched Foley win the division with her Purple Strides 5K in 19:29 last year. She learned her lesson a ramped up her race to 18:58 this year to take the division. In late August, she was the overall winner at the MCRRC Eastern County 8K in 31:41. Conant was warming up for her annual Kensington 8K in the fall that she has won as well.

Kendall Tata was looking real good for the third spot as she outraced Andrea Wright at the Fairview 5K 20:24 to 20:36 to add to her Kiwanis Club Independence Day 5K in 20:22. Then at the end of August at the Charlottesville Women’s 4M Wright surged ahead winning in 25:39. Fifth place Carla Havens ran an opening day Elizabeth River Run 10K in 43:22, while sixth place Laura Shannon had the fastest half marathon at the Rock N Roll VAB with 1:36:42.

The saddest news is that seventh place Trish Cunningham will not be returning. Always a tough competitor, Coach Cunningham was killed on August 22, 2013 in a collision while riding her bike. Her last races were on the weekend of June 15-16 when she won at the Baltimore 10M and returned the next day to win the Dawson’s 10K.

Leesburg 20K 1:22:38, 10K = 39:22

Carole Jones won the division last year with her Leesburg 20K. This year she slowed a bit to 1:31:32 and finished third place in the division. She had to know that Deedee Loughran was coming. Loughran won the 50-54, last year with 1:24:54. This year she ran an open qualifying time of 1:22:38 and should manhandle the division in the fall with two qualifiers.

Dorothy Beckett takes the runner-up spot at the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K with 20:19, though her next best 5K at the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K was just 21:41. Jones had three faster other races, including the Southlakes 10K in 44:46. Ofelia Perotti takes fifth place with a solid Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 44:47. Her second race the Let Freedom Run 5K in 22:06 was slower than Hosni Haghighian’s Kiwanis Club Independence Day 5K I n21:32. Haghighian earned her fourth place spot with the fastest 4 mile of the period in Charlottesville with 27:52.

For now, Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico rules the roost. She owned seven of the top nine times with four overall wins. Her five 5Ks were all just a tad slower than Beckett. She left nothing to chance with the best qualifier on opening day, winning the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 41:40.

Run N Mate 21:59, 10K = 45:51

The division shrank to just 39 qualifiers maybe it was the arrival of Betty Blank. Blank was injured most of the first part of year and finally listened to advice and stayed out of racing. She came back with some middling efforts at four DCRRC club races. Her two 5Ks at Bluemont Park are really her home course and, though warm, the course is fast with a great downhill finish from the turnaround. Her best time at 23:41 would not get it done.

Barbara Mathewson made a huge improvement over her spring taking the lead from the first day with a marvelous Elizabeth River Run 10K in 47:51 that would have put her right on the heels of Franks from the spring and last summer. Then in mid June came the New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K. There was an avalanche of time that seemed too good to be true. Maria Shields led the way among three ladies to take places three through five. She ran 23:06; her second best race was the AS Dawson's 10K in 50:39. Esther Buchser ran 23:13; her second best race was the Bel Air Town Run 5K in 25:28. Penny Williams was next in 23:23; her second best race was the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 2:08:52.

When Blank blasted the late August Run & Mate 5K in 21:59, she was very pleased. She also knew she would have to assure people that the course was legit. When she is healthy she is capable of that time but we have to go back to December 2011 on a fast course since she has been this healthy.

Purple Strides 5K 22:07, 10K 46:03

Last summer nobody had a sub 50:00 10K equivalent. The division grew to 36 finishers but only one had a shot at the title. Hovering just above 100 pounds Alice Franks made mince meat of the division with times almost enough to win the division she had just left. All seven of her races were sub 50s. She toyed with the division racing upper 23s in the 5K on some rolling hills. The she stepped on the gas to win the fast course Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 47:04. A week later she lampooned that race with an unbelievable 22:07 at the Purple Strides 5K, 38 seconds faster than last year. That is more than a minute faster than the Virginia state record and the only sub 23:00 in the last ten years save for Kathleen Phillips 22:52 at the Jimmy K 5K in 2008.

That definitely made Larue Lennon’s Mission Possible 5K in 24:30 to open the summer a mission impossible though good enough for runner-up in this and any other year. Two days earlier Betty Brothers returned to third position winning at the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 51:43. Joanne Murphy had her best of two ten milers winning at Annapolis in 1:28:50 to take fourth place. Fifth place Dee Nelson only had nine races; winning eight, with her best at Alex’s Run 5K in June with 25:48. She aged up less than week after the summer closed and that race would have won her new division.

Mental Health Recovery Run 5K 25:55, 10K = 53:58

Four of the top five returned to take their same spot from last summer. Joan Coven raced three times winning all with the three fastest times of the division. Her Chesty Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K in 55:40 was more than four minutes ahead of runner-up Molly Sherwood who slowed a minute at the AS Dawson's 10K in 1:00:15. Third place Ecris Williams won her division six times with her best race at the Southlakes 10K in 1:02:01.

Look out though because the first week of the fall Dee Nelson aged up and will be charging hard for another division crown. Her best race of the summer would have done just that. Coven has not raced sine mid June when she won the Warhill 5K in 26:08. Fourth place goes to a newbie Nancy Jakubec on the always fast Pony Pasture 5K course in 30:23 right on the hooves of Williams’ best 5K in Leesburg at 30:17. Fifth place Judy Stewart followed Coven home at the Warhill 5K in 32:38. Nobody else was close to the top five though quite of few of them are still capable of getting there such as Mary Kate Berglund’s solo effort at the Autism 5K in 29:46.

Charlottesville 4 Miler 41:39, 10K = 1:06:41

Ernestine Shepherd tried out the brand new Charles Street 12M in August. That was easily the longest race in the division. Runner-up Tami Graf ran two of the other four races at least 10K in length. Her Dawson's 10K in 1:08:07 would have been just good enough to hold off Nancy Fraser’s Kiwanis Club Independence Day 5K in 32:44. However, the day before Graf was torturing herself on the hot and hilly Larry Noel 15K course, Fraser bolted to the lead at the women’s 4 miler in Charlottesville with 41:39. Shepherd added a solid GBMC Father's Day 5K in 34:08 nearly a minute ahead of the best 5K from Janet Hughes but Hughes waited till the very last day to run the Chick-fil-A Dash for Diabetes 4M in 43:58, just three second behind Graf’s July 4th 4 miler, to snatch third place in the division.

Yvonne Aasen raced 14 times with 12 age group wins. She raced six times with Westminster and returned to Annapolis for three more times. Her fastest race was the second weekend of July when she raced the WDF 5K with both clubs, Annapolis in 38:08. That was just two seconds off last year’s runner-up Ruth Ketron. This time Lee Glassco is the runner-up running the DCRRC Hugh Jascourt 4M in 58:01.
