Army 10 Mile 54:56, 10K = 33:01

Always a prolific division, Clair Hallissey led the way with an amazing 25 victories. Her best race was the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 55:51. She skipped the usual title making Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K and won it all at the Apple Blossom 10K and the Lawyers Have Heart in a matching 34:35. Runner-up Wayinshet Abebe did do the Pike in 33:47 well ahead of former champion Tezata Dengersa’s 34:27. Dengersa improved at Army to win in 56:37. Abebe moved higher as well finishing third at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge HM in 1:14:11.

In the spring, fourth place Susanna Sullivan was marvelous at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:16:31 and continued strong in finishing second at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 34:50. Fifth place Rachel Ward ran the shortest race of the festival in 27:29 at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K matching Sullivan’s Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 27:40 exactly. Then Ward added the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 34:54.

After that we go back to Rockville where sixth place Sallie Ford beats seventh place Lindsay O’Brien 34:36 to 34:37. In the fall, Ward triumphed over Ford at the Charlottesville 4 Miler 21:40 to 22:49. O’Brien’s next best race was at Cherry Blossom in 59:26. Her 10K saved her as it was ahead of ninth place Barb Fallon Wallace’s 35:12 run there. Ten place Peggy Yetman was ahead of her at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 58:47 and so was eighth place Renee High in 58:54. High moved ahead of Yetman with her Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:17:30.

Beth Conlon ran down the Pike in 35:18 for 11th place. The second master in the top twelve is Perry Shoemaker who ran Army in 59:07. That put her just ahead of Erin Taylor who ran 59:18 at Army and 35:30 at the Pike.

21 of the top 76 runners came from other divisions.

19 & Younger Women

Westchester Shamrock 5K 16:44, 10K = 34:50

The top two were intertwined. Last year’s runner-up Avery Cunningham was the most prolific. In mid march Kaityln Govatos would win it all at the B & A Trail Half Marathon in 1:28:59. Cunningham, still just 14, trailed four runners back. She would need a big race to get past what was then the top race among qualifiers. The first week in April they met again. Avery had won the Cherry Pit 10 Mile before. Today she held off Govatos 1:06:44 to 1:07:00. That gave her a matching head-to-head with a faster time to take the title.

After that Michaela Peterson ran a fine Purple Strides 5K, a race that always has surprisingly fast times. Three months later she met Katriona McNeil at Ellen’s Run and lost 20:02 to 19:30. At first glance, that might seem enough for McNeil to take third. However, Peterson had five other races that were much faster than any of McNeil’s other races. It seemed best to throw out both of their mysterious “best” races and then the matchup crystallized with Peterson earning the third spot.

Fourth and fifth went to Samantha Schreiber for her overall at the I am Woman 5K in 19:27 with Gillian Livingston matching her time at the Thomas Jefferson PI Miler, albeit for third overall. Neither of them had a second race anywhere near that time.

35-39 Women

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 35:12

Sherry Stick had four overall wins before entering the division. She added nine more as a submaster including her two best races of the year. Her fastest race at the Casey Cases 5K in 17:52 matched the eleventh best time of our division champion. Barb Fallon Wallace has since aged up so this will be her last submasters title and she made it a good one.

Fallon Wallace runs the big races with 11 major races and five overall wins. She started strong at the Jingle All the Way 8K in 28:35. In the spring, at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K, she finished four minutes ahead of second place with 35:12. Then she got a look at her 2014 competition at Army, running home in 59:36.

Last year’s champion Lisa Thomas was sitting in seventh place in April when she posted a 1:04:05 at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile. Sixth place Melissa Rittenhouse ran the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:24:09 ahead of her by a couple minutes. Then in November Thomas bolted into third place at the Veterans Day 10K in 37:39.

Stephanie Hoag had two overall wins including the Back to Football 5K in 18:12 to take fourth place. Tatiana Sheptock came to life in the late summer catching Rittenhouse at the Leesburg 20K 1:19:51 to 1:21:03 to squeeze by her.

Twenty-eight women qualified for the division.

40-44 Women

New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K 16:37, 10K = 34:36

Last year’s champion Elena Orlova still had the chops with the fastest race and a solid lead ahead of third place Kelly Westlake (37:07) at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K. Her 35:41 was the fourth fastest race in the division. But she fell one race short of qualifying in two seasons.

The top two finishers would have loved the challenge. Perry Shoemaker had three overall wins with eight top three finishes. The first day was an overall win at the Veterans Day 5K in 18:22. Peggy Yetman waited until January to win three of her four races out right. Her fourth was a second place finish in 17:49 that matched her first victory of the year. The most important race for these ladies was their head-to-head at the Reston 10 Mile the first week of March. Shoemaker was second overall in 1:00:47. Yetman takes the race and the year winning it all in 1:00:15.

Yetman added a wonderful Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 58:47, besting Westlake (1:02:25) and fourth place Brenda Schrank 1:02:36). Shoemaker ran a near record 59:07 at Army to close the gap. Schrank, who had 12 overall victories, followed her 10 mile race two weeks later to win it all at the Andrew Air Force Half Marathon in 1:24:10 beating everyone of either sex. Fifth place Yoko England ran twice as long to accomplish the same thing as the first finisher at the Norfolk Freedom Marathon in 2:59:33.

Just twenty-seven women qualified for the division.

Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K 18:41, 10K = 38:54

The usual suspect, Alisa Harvey, turned up to capture the title. She had six of the top ten times while the next four ladies had just one. Harvey has always been none for record breaking speed at the middle distance. The 5K is at the outer edge of that class. Six of her seven races were fast 5Ks, four times finishing in the top three overall. The first week she ran the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 18:41 and no one was able to wrench her crown away.

Denise Knickman aged up mid year and took advantage of a fast New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K time of 18:49 to sneak into second place. In April, still a tender young thing of 44 she matched fifth place Paula Pels exactly at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:08:39. Pels was listed two places behind her with net time placement. Third and fourth place finishers Robyn Humphrey 1:05:39 and Lane Tingle 1:07:33 were also at Cherry Blossom.

Humphrey gets third ahead of Tingle but as Knickman was in another age group at the time, (apples and oranges) we do not need to decide if her faster 5K was enough to overcome a head-to-head loss. Harvey, a multiple Army 10 miler winner, decided to run the Perfect 10 instead this year with a solid 1:06:29. Tingle went to Army and ran a very nice 1:05:58 to have Humphrey looking over her shoulder.

Forty-seven runners made the rankings.

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 38:45

None of the top thirty times began before the RRCA Challenge when Cindy Conant got it underway with a very nice 1:06:57. A week later Deedee Loughran bested that at the Reston 10M in 1:06:46. The next week Conant upped the ante at the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 31:09. A week later at the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon Conant scooted by with a nifty 1:28:47. The next day Martha Merz ran the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:28:26.

In April Merz met Conant again at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile with Conant winning 1:06:07 to 1:06:45. At the end of April the three racers net at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K. Conant improved by a minute over 2012 to win it all in 38:45. Loughran was next in 39:19, followed by Merz in 39:47.

Kendall Tata started out the year slowly but by the summer she had moved up to fourth place just behind Andrea Wright’s Charlottesville 4 Miler in 25:39 with a couple of fast 5Ks. In the fall Conant tied Wright for the best time of the period with her Navy-Air Force Half Marathon in 1:28:16. Wright ran the Pepsi 10K in 39:53. Had Tata run a second fall race her 39:48 win would have earned the seasonal title. It did get her past Wright for fourth for the year.

The qualifiers dropped by a third to thirty-seven from last year. class="cell">Fifty-five runners qualified for the division.

Leesburg 20K 1:22:38, 10K = 39:22

Mercedes Castillo D'Amico gave one of the biggest shellacking of any division when she had 20 of the top 22 times as well as 12 overall wins. She won all of her 14 5Ks including a division best at the Menchville Winter Chill 5K in 19:54. Runner-up Dorothy Becket had a really nice Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 42:21 for the 11th best race. Castillo D'Amico had two 10Ks faster including the Elizabeth River Run in 41:26.

Third place Carole Jones ran an excellent Leesburg 20K in 1:31:32 and none of these ladies with their combined 44 age group or better wins would have held off the latest entry to the division, Deedee Loughran. She had seven times faster than their best but four were at age 54 and, a one race short, three for age 55.

Jones ran a near Perfect 10 10 Mile in 1:12:45. Beckett handled the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:12:36. Theirs were the best qualifying 10 milers. By contrast Loughran ran the Reston 10M in 1:06:46. Fourth place Ofelia Perotti ran well at the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon in 1:37:51. Fifth place Elizabeth Baumgarten ran the Veterans Day 10K in 45:24.

Thirty-two women qualified for the division.

Run & Mate 5K 21:59, 10K = 45:51

Alice Franks looked to have a good shot at the very difficult honor of winning two divisions in one year. Last year’s runner-up Barbara Mathewson had a very good start winning the winter with a solid VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 47:32 while Franks was still getting back on track with her Turkey Burnoff in 1:21:01. Then in March the highly competitive Betty Blank drifted into the division and aced the DCRRC Burke Lake 12K in 57:11 to take the lead.

Mathewson added a 23:09 at the Governor's Land 5K. After that Franks ran a disappointing 1:20:41 at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile and she was looking at third place. Then Blank went down with an injury and the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K came to the rescue. Franks only slowed ten seconds from her division winning time of last year in 46:39. It was her last chance because all her times after that were in the new division.

Blank recovered and produced some decent times that would keep her ahead of Mathewson but she needed a big race to catch Franks. A month after racing a 23:41 on her home course in Bluemont Park, she entered the Run & Mate 5K and exploded to a superb 21:59 to snag the division. It was her fastest time since the Clarendon 5K in 2012. This year she ran 22:35 there.

The next three spots went to Maria Shields (23:06), Esther Buchser (23:13), and Penny Williams (23:23) who ran the New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K. That race produced some surprisingly fast times for a lot of runners. Thirty-seven women made the rankings.

65-69 Women

Veterans Day 10K 45:55

Dee Nelson had a long run at or near the top of the division. She turned 70 in September and has the stuff to challenge for that title. She knew when 64.9 year old Alice Franks beat her by a mile at Cherry Blossom that the second half of the year would be all Franks. Nelson had run sub 50:00 at Pike’s Peek the first three years in the division. This year she slowed barely to 50:47 and that was the top time in the division until May when Franks avalanched her way to the crown with sixteen faster races.

She poured it on all through the year. When she popped a 22:07 at the Purple Strides 5K a number of runners thought the course may have been short. Then she posted an Army 10 mile in 1:17:31 that was almost as fast. She ended all doubt with a superior 45:55 at the Veterans Day 10K.

After Franks the next three spots were close as can be. Betty Brothers was a mere four seconds slower than Nelson when she ran the VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 50:51. She also had five other quality races ahead of Nelson’s second best race, including the Neptune Festival 8K in 40:25. Right on their heels was Larue Lennon with the two fastest 5Ks of the period in 24:30 and some long distance strength winning the Frederick Half Marathon in 1:52:54. Fifth place Laurel Clement spoke loudly for her spot with a fine 52:26 at the Run for the Parks 10K.

Thirty-three women qualified for the division.

70-74 Women

Governor's Land 5K 25:04, 10K = 52:11

Joan Coven easily proved the fastest of the 12 qualifying women this year by having the fastest 12 times in the division. She bolted out the first day of the racing new year by setting a Virginia State record at the Governor's Land 5K in 25:04. She slowed more than a minute at the Crapolfest 5K to 26:00 but had five other 5K races that were faster. She was the only qualifier that ran longer than 10 miles, winning the Anthem Half Marathon in 2:03:00.

Kate Berglund was an easy pick for the runner-up spot with the next nine fastest times, though none closer than six minutes to Coven’s slowest 10K equivalent. She dropped an excellent 58:56 at the Apple Blossom 10K that was just behind a matching set of 28:17 5K victories.

The next two were extremely close but will not get another chance to match up in 2014 as third place Ecris Williams has aged up. Williams was a second faster at the Run Your Heart Out 5K in 28:56 then fourth place molly Sherwood was at the Dawson's 10K with 1:00:15. The both had a slew of races mere seconds apart. The edge goes to Williams with ten milers. She ran Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:40:23 and the Reston 10M in 1:40:26 while Sherwood ran the Annapolis 10M in 1:00:49 and the Cherry Pit 10M in 1:06:45.

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 1:02:43

Tami Graf cruised through the winter and come spring improved on her winning time in Rockville at Pike’s Peek from 2012 to 1:02:43 to again take the division. She was tops in 31 of her races. In the summer she slowed and had to settle for runner-up to Nancy Fraser who would have finished third with more qualifiers.

Janet Hughes pulled away to win the fall with the second and third fastest times for the year. Graf and Hughes combined for 44 of the top 45 times in the division. A former champ Ernestine Shepherd was third as she makes another comeback to racing at the GBMC Father's Day 5K 34:08.

Lawyers Have Heart 5K 35:03, 10K = 1:12:58

Yvonne Aasen continues to get better and more prolific as she ages. Her best race at the McDaniel Track in Westminster was nearly two minutes faster at 33:19 than when she was 79 during the first half of 2011. She won her division thirty times and won every season. Second place Jacqueline O’Neil improved through the year having her best race in the fall.

Yvonne Aasen averaged two races a month all year long. She raced mostly 5Ks but also ran five races 10K or longer. Perhaps her most difficult event was her shortest, the Hashawa 2.86M. It is a tough cross country jaunt that produces times similar to road 4 milers. Martha Trimmer is back as she finishes off the last year in the 80-84 division,
