Open Women

HCA 8K 24:53, 10K = 31:36

Womenís racing is getting bigger, better, and faster with six runners fast enough for the menís open division and a winter record 74 runners qualifying. Last winterís fourth place finisher Claire Hallissey had a great winter with seventh victories, one ahead of all the men. She raced a rare sub 60:00 RRCA Challenge 10M to victory just to earn twelfth place in the division.

Last winterís champion Susanna Sullivan started the period with an excellent American Family Fitness Half Marathon in 1:17:22 that was fourth overall, ahead of tenth place Sallie Fordís 1:18:26. That and her overall win at the Run Your Heart Out 5K in 16:48 would leave her eighth in the division.

The first weekend would have most of the answers as Sophy Jepchirchir took the runner-up spot at the American Family Fitness Half Marathon in 1:13:59. She added the fastest 5K winning the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 16:39 to earn the crown. The next day at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K Kerri Gallagher ran a swift 40:59 ahead of sixth place Elizabeth Malovís 41:33. She added two overall wins, including the Jingle All the Way 8K in 27:28 to help her maintain the runner-up spot.

Back to that Saturday four other women took their spot with even faster 8Ks at HCA in Richmond. Third place goes to Rachel Ward (26:45), along with her Boars Head Turkey Trot 5K triumph in 16:50. Fourth has Susan Jerotich running HCA in 26:52 just ahead of Joan Tangwarís 26:54. Jerotich was runner-up at the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 16:51, followed by Tangwarís 16:58. Ninth place former champion Tezata Dengarsa was next there in 17:01, Catherine White at 27:05 and fifth at HCA takes seventh place in the division.

Eleventh place Heathers Stephens was runner-up at the Jingle All the Way 8K in 28:19 and edges past Hallissey winning the head-to-head matchup at the Love the Run You're with 5K 17:17 to 17:23.

Richmond Jingle Bell 5K for Arthritis 17:47, 10K = 36:51

Maria Elena Calle ran a fine 29:05 at the HCA 8K to start the season. The next day Barb Fallon Wallace ran her final race in the division at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K in 44:53 to match her exactly. She had two faster 5 milers as a master but they only count to give her qualification for the division. Calle wins the Richmond Jingle Bell 5K for Arthritis race overall in 17:42 and takes the division. She would also win the Frostbite 15K in 57:43 to take three of top four races in the division.

Third place Sherry Stick is known for winning Westminster Road Runners races, occasionally beating all the men as well. She started there at Thanksgiving with a solid 18:18 win. Fifth place Rachel Northup had her best race at the HCA 8K in 29:55 at second age group. Fourth place Lisa Thomas was just ahead of Stickís 5K and Northupís Frostbite 15K in 58:50 at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K in 46:16. In December, Thomas won the division at the Jingle All the Way 8K in 29:55. The following week Stick ran the toughest of the three races winning the Celtic Solstice in 30:07 to photo finish past the other two ladies.

Tim Kennard 10M Mile River Run 1:07:32, 10K = 40:35

Four of the top eight runners met at the RRCA Challenge 10M in late February. Denise Knickman led the way in 1:07:59 to win the division. She added frosting to the cake as runner-up at the Tim Kennard 10M the following week in 1:07:32. Fifth place Robyn Humphrey was edged by Keary Johnston 1:09:20 to 1:09:41 even though Humphrey had a slightly faster Celtic Solstice 5M in 32:57. Humphrey turned fifty in late March. Johnston had won it all at the Lewis Memorial 10M prediction race with no real competition and no watch to guide her. Eighth place Lind Lou OíConnor was not far behind in 1:10:12. Seventeen runners had a qualifying time there.

Seventh place Maria Galbraith led 16 other qualifiers at the American Family Fitness Half Marathon to start the season in easily the fastest half of the period in 1:32:35. Just ahead of her with two swift 5Ks was Debbie McLaughlin. Both races she was second overall and a combined four seconds slower than 20:00. The winterís runner-up Cheryl McMurray started modestly with the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 20:10 but celebrated at the GW Birthday 10K in 40:59. Third place goes to Rebecca Nathan. She also was tardy getting underway running the Kinhaven 5K in 20:09. Then she started the year with the DCRRC New Yearís Day Predictions and Resolutions 5K in 19:54 on a course that seems flat but never seems to have really fast times.

Forty-three runners qualified for the division.

50-54 Women

RRCA Challenge 10 Mile 1:04:07, 10K = 38:32

Cindy Conant is doing something rare. At age 52 she is getting faster. Last year, she started the season running the Turkey Burnoff 10M for second overall. This year she knocked off two minutes and won it all in 1:07:36. Then she improved on all four of her other races from last year. She raced three modified 5 milers (an 8K, a 5M and an 8.5K), finishing second overall twice. Last year she ran the RRCA challenge in 1:06:57 and got caught by DeeDee Loughranís Reston 10M on the final weekend by nine seconds. This year she determinedly laid done the hammer and crushed the course in a stupendous 1:04:07, nearly four and a half minutes faster than the open qualifying standard.

Runner-up Laura Shannon ran the third largest 8K, the Busch Gardens Christmas Town Dash, to overall victory in 32:04. By mid season Tata Kendall had dropped a minute of her 5K time for a solid CTC New Year's 5K in 19:42 to be the third grandmaster with an open class time. Fifth place Maria Spinnler ran the Hagerstown Turkey Trot 5K in 20:10. She never had another race near that fast. The more consistent Pamela Lovett was top master that same morning at the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in Fredericksburg with 20:12. In February she matched that pace winning at the Love Rox Half Marathon in 1:33:04. Linda Foley edged Eleanor Kerr with her 20:20 5K in December. Kerr ran the First Down 5K in 20:27.

Fifty-six runners qualified for the division.

55-59 Women

Reston New Year's 5K 19:33, 10K = 40:42

The division exploded with quantity and quality with the top eight runners fast enough to qualify for the 40-44 division. Last winterís champion Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico still owns the Virginia State record for the 10K and the 5K. Her only race was the Governorís Land 5K in 20:04, missing her record by three seconds.

Since then two of the giants of masters women racing have aged up. Both of Leisa Villaniís 50-54 state records were set a few years back. Villani briefly took the overall lead as second master at the Surf 'n' Santa 10M in an excellent 1:11:51. In February, her Virginia is for Lovers 14K in 1:00:02 matched Castillo-D'Amico exactly. Of course by then Deedee Loughran had stormed through Reston with two superb 5Ks. In December she eased past the state record in 19:59 at the Run with Santa 5K. Then she started the year with a bold statement 19:33 at the Reston New Year's 5K to put all the other women that 2014 was going to be the year of the Loughran.

Third place Ofelia Perotti continues to be very competitive starting the season out with her US National Road Racing Championships 12K in 54:25. In February she won at the GW Birthday Classic 10K in 45:55. Fourth place Hosni Haghighian had the fastest half marathon, racing three Bridges in 1:39:51. Fifth place Dorothy Beckett had the fastest marathon in Richmond in November with 3:31:11. In February she took on the hilly RRCA Challenge 10M in 1:15:52.

Mary Lowe Mayhugh finished close behind racing the speedy Run Geek Run 8K in 36:00. Carole Jones had the tough act to follow at Reston races behind Loughran that gave her seventh place in the division, racing 22:02 on New Yearís. Eighth place Elizabeth Baumgarten was a mere four seconds behind her time racing the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 22:06.

Forty-four runners qualified for the division.

American Family Fitness Half Marathon 1:45:17, 10K = 47:34

Third place Dru Sexton was top master at the Star City Half Marathon in a very nice 1:47:25 the second week of the season. Too bad, because Betty Blank had already taken the division, racing the American Family Fitness Half Marathon in 1:45:17. She would need that because two weeks later Barbara Mathewson won at the VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 48:14. Blank was close behind that day racing the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 38:21. Mathewson had already led the way with the fastest 5K at the Governor's Land in 23:21. That would hold Blank at bay until the New Year when she added two faster 5Ks.

All of these top racers were close. Fourth place Linda Gulickís HCS 8K in 38:35 was the ninth fastest race in the division, a mere 14 seconds behind Blankís 5M. Fifth place Helen Jones takes her spot racing the Celtic Solstice 5M in 41:31.

Jingle All the Way 8K 36:47, 10K = 46:43

Champion Alice Franks raced lightly in the winter, taking the top seven times but with five of them being MCRRC Club races. She ended November with a rampage winning the YMCA Turkey Chase 10K on Thursday in 48:26. Two days later the holiday was over and she rocketed through Seneca Park at the Turkey Burnoff in 1:17:50. Next Sunday she went downtown at one of the most competitve 8K in the area and cruised to victory in 36:47.

Runner-up Betty Brothers ran her holiday race at the VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 51:18. She waited till the New Year to race 10 miles at the Tidewater Striders Tune-up in 1:25:11. Larue Lennon secret (speed) cannot be hidden any longer. She started the period racing the Burk memorial 5K in 24:51 as the top masters. That race has a big net downhill as it starts at the top of a hill and finish near the bottom. In between, runners get to enjoy some daunting hills that can really slow you down. Lennon also ran well at the Bear Run 4M in 32:45.

In other holidays, fifth place Barbara Biasi ran the Busch Gardens Christmas Town Dash 8K in 42:58, while Laurel Clement took fourth racing the Reston New Year's 5K in 25:59.

Thirty-three runners qualified for the division.

Run Your Heart Out 5K 26:07, 10K = 55:04

Dee Nelson has always been a tough competitor. She charged into the division last fall to finish as runner-up to multiple race state record holder Joan Coven. Now in the winter Coven disappeared and Nelson pulverized the division winning all nine of her races. Her slowest race started the period on the hilly Burleigh Manor 5K in Columbia. It was close to a minute faster than Nancy Jakubecís First Day 5K in 31:02. Note that Nelsonís race was a 2:00 p.m. Earlier that morning she had run the King of the Road 5K in 26:41.

As with Jakubec, third place Molly Sherwood got faster as the period progressed and topped at the AS Anniversary 15K in 1:39:36. Last winterís runner-up Mary Kate Berglund started slowly in November. Then on the final Saturday she moved up to fourth place, racing the St Francis Home 5K in 31:36.

Ecris Williams is famous for racing the Rotary Resolution 10K since its inception. Since turning 75 she has won her age group every month dominating Reston. After more than a decade in Leesburg, she raced a 5K more than a minute faster than her Run with Santa and two minutes faster than Tami Graf ran at the By George 5K.

Graf held on to the runner-up spot at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K in 1:18:57. Williams ran her heart out in February to the sub 30 tune of 29:49. She followed that with an excellent Reston 10M in 1:44:23. Janet Hughes takes third racing the SVR Jingle Bell 5K in 33:09
