19 & Younger Women

Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler 30:07, 10K = 37:59

Jacqueline Clark ran the Fair Oaks Volunteer Fire & Rescue Ambulance Chase 5K in 19:57 on the first day of the period. A week later she won the Her 5K at the National Harbor in 18:20 and her work was done. Michaela Petersonís first day was an excellent overall win at the Save the Trail 5K in 19:42. Fourth place Isabelle Oliver had her best of three races at the Reston Firecracker 5K in 19:46. That was enough to pass Peterson for fourth place when she stumbled a little at the Reston race in 20:09.

Young Page Lester, 14, is from a racing family with mom (Hilary) and dad (Malcolm) ranked runners whenever they race. She takes third place with two overall wins, including the Alexandria Running Festival 5K in 18:53 on the second day of the season. Runner-up Haley Wright was the only to wait till August. She ran a very good Donut Alley Rally 5K in 18:25. Coupled with her Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler in 38:28 just eight seconds from overall victory was almost enough to get her past Clark for the title.

In all, fifty-four women made the rankings.

35-39 Women

Charlottesville 4 Miler 22:41, 10K = 36:19

Sherry Stick has become very accustomed to winning. As a Westminster Road Runners she has been an overall winner many times, including ALL the racers of both sexes. Now a submaster she has expanded her racing area even more with the same results. She won all nine races that she ran outright.

Maria Elena Calle won both her 5Ks as well with the divisionís fastest race the Pony Pasture 5K in 17:33. That and a runner-up as the Patrick Henry HM in 1:21:41 gave her two of the top four times and the title. Third place Lindsay Wilkins only had two races but they were good. She was runner-up at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 36:47. Then she was third overall at the Reston Firecracker 5K in 17:48. Stick holds onto the runner-up spot by the narrowest of margins winning the Donut Alley Rally 5K in 17:39.

After these three titans, Teresa Allman takes fourth place with two overall wins, including the fifteenth best race the East Coast Surfing Championship 5K in 18:31. She had the fastest 8K in the division at the King's Daughters 8K in 30:49. Fifth place Rachelle Lee-Warner was third overall at the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 38:58.

Twenty-three women qualified for the division.

40-44 Women

Lawyers Have Heart 10K 36:55

Only two women had a second time in the top ten races, making their placement easy. Barb Fallon Wallace crushed the division with an excellent Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 36:55. On the fourth of July she had the fastest 5K by more than a minute at the Reston Firecracker 5K in 17:50. Brenda Schrank ran that same day at the Liberty 5K in 19:20 and was second overall. She took the runner-up spot by rebounding at the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon to 1:25:22.

Third place Perry Shoemaker struggled early at the Zooma HM but came back strong for second overall at the Southlakes 10K in 39:22. Fourth place Jen Sober did not even crack the top fifty times winning the Iron Furnace 5K in 20:46 and recovered in two weeks later in July at Lisaís Run in 19:02. Fifth place Kelly Westlake raced more evenly in her two overall victories, the Remembrance 5K in 19:13 in May and two months later at the HCS WDF 5K in 19:22.

Sixth place Amy Martin started the season racing the Alexandria Running Festival Half Marathon in 1:28:43. Next came Lisa Reichman who had a tough time at the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon the first week. She went to Hagerstown for the huge Donut Alley Rally 5K in August and ran well in 19:17. Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler 30:24, 10K = 38:20

Susan Graham-Grey went with tried and true and again won the Run Through History 10K. This year she improved more than two minutes to win outright in 38:28. That same morning runner-up Denise Knickman had a very credible Bel Air Town Run 5K in 19:40. Knickman would add a third master award at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 32:40. This summerís surprisingly fast course is the Park Heights Community Health Alliance 5K and Knickman raced an excellent 19:14 to close. But Graham-Grey laid down the hammer improving again at the Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler to 30:24 and second overall.

Third place Kellie Redmond started conservatively at the Lawyers Have Heart 5K in 20:42. Then she finished strong at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 20:09. That course is fair but not fast. However, competition again made some excellent times for runners there this year. Fourth place Debbie McLaughlin ran a couple a nice 5Ks, including the Super Hero 5K at The Vineyards in 20:24 for third overall.

Fifth place Anita Freres is back. She started great winning second overall at the Friends of W&OD 10K in 42:33. Then she slowed four minutes at the Southlakes 10K three weeks later to nearly lose her spot. Sixth place Paula Pels started well in May running the Save the Trail 5K in 20:29 and stayed the course with a nice Eastern County 8K in 34:37 in a race with a challenging uphill finish.

Thirty-one women qualified for the division.

Charlottesville 4 Miler 25:08, 10K = 40:14

Cindy Conant was the favorite to lead the forty-four qualifiers for this summer. She slowed slightly at the Purple Strides for the fastest 5K of the summer in 19:42, an overall win. The in mid July she had her best race, taking second master at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 31:54. The week before that third place Andrea Wright had run Summer Extravaganza 5K in 20:32 for her own overall win.

Meanwhile Kendall Tata had taken the Kiwanis Club Independence Day 5K in 20:02 on the fourth. The day Conant raced the 8K, she was running the Fairview 5K in 20:33. It looked as if Wright and her would do battle at the Charlottesville 4M to end the period. Conant added a solid Eastern County 8K in 32:30 to have the three fastest races so far. Then on the final weekend, Wright moved to third running a nifty 26:11 and Tata exploded to the title with a magnificent 25:08 for the 4 miler.

Fourth place Karla Havens earned her spot in May racing the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 42:14. Two days later Robyn Humphrey took fifth place running the Remembrance 5K in 20:20. Sixth place Pamela Lovett was oh so close, racing second overall at the Deltaville 5K in 20:23. Janeth Scott ran the swift course Park Heights Community Health Alliance 5K in 20:33.

Leesburg 20K 1:24:21, 10K = 40:21

DeeDee Loughran ran only the Leesburg 20K last summer. This year she slowed two minutes to 1:24:41 and it was still the best race of the period. However, this year she added the Southlakes 10K in 41:11 and three 5Ks, all in Reston, including an overall win at the Reston WDF in 19:32. All five of her races made the open standard making her the oldest elite division qualifier at fifty-six.

Last summerís champion Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico had the next five races finishing top three or better in four of them including her overall win at the Coast Guard Day 5K in 20:40. She ran the Elizabeth River 10K in 42:57 and had the fastest 8K at the Run for the Achievable Dream in 33:55 to start the period.

Making it easy, Dorothy Beckett had the next fastest three times. She ran the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in 21:37 and had a very solid Annapolis 10 miler in 1:16:48. Fifth place Ofelia Perotti had a special Springfield 5K in 22:16. Fourth place Cindy White was first at the Run for the Achievable Dream HM in 1:42:52 and backed that up with a solid Elizabeth River 10K in 46:34.

Nancy Hill ran the Running with the Rams 5K in 22:20 to finish right behind those two racers. Mary Lowe Mayhugh was the overall winner at the Battle of Bladensburg 5K in 22:31 to take seventh place in the division.

Thirty women qualified for the division.

DCRRC Bastille Day 3.8M 28:15, 10K = 46:11

Five of Betty Blankís wins were running the DC Roadrunner races. Her other five races were major events. In all, she made it look easy. She took away hope on the first weekend racing the Alexandria Running Festival Half Marathon in 1:43:04. Her best 5K at the Lawyers Have Heart in 22:36 was a minute faster than runner-up Lydia Johnson ran at the Bel Air Town Run 5K. She added the summerís big 8K, the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, in 37:37.

Johnson added the Harford Hounds 4M in 31:16 to cement her spot. Blank ran the traditional DCRRC Bastille Day race. It was supposed to be four miles but a downed tree on a rainy night had the course shortened to 3.8 miles which she ran in a swift 28:15.

The next three spots were hotly contested. Third place Marcy Foster ran the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler in 31:27. Then she added the competitive Run with Dad 5K (24:15) and the huge Reston Firecracker 5K in 24:25. Fourth place Maria Shields was close racing the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 24:37. She also added two fast 10Ks including the Arbutus Firecracker 10K in 50:31. Linda Gulick with six age groups was next, racing best at the RRRC Cul De Sac Series 5K #3 in 24:41. Sixth place Frances Newton was next at the Stratford Hills 10K in 51:45.

Lawyers Have Heart 10K 46:31

Chris Craun had the tenth fastest time winning at the Baltimore 10 Miler in 1:24:17. That would get her the runner-up spot ahead of Betty Brothers who had run a very nice Elizabeth River Run 10K in 51:17. Alice Franks easily retains her crown with the top nine times, all faster than a 50:00 10K.

Franks had her very best race in mid June winning the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 46:31. She bested seventh place Laurel Clement at the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler 30:27 to 33:32. Clement was sandwiched by sixth place Ellen Raabeís Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in 25:29 and eighth place Ann Rosenthalís Oy Vey 5K in 25:53.

On our nationís birthday Franks defeated Craun at the Autism Speaks 5K on a tough course 23:43 to 24:52. Two weeks later she returned to Rockville for the Rotary Twilight 8K, winning easily in 37:24. Fifth place Nancy Avitabile ran 41:42. Franks ran the Eastern County 8K in late August. The following day in Annapolis Marge Burley earned fourth place winning at the Annapolis 10 miler in 1:27:09.

Thirty-six runners qualified for the division.

Keep Punching 5K 25:41, 10K = 53:28

Dee Nelson took the crown with 11 win and the top nine times in the division. She won a lot of WDF 5Ks as well as a couple of four milers. Three of her top five races were in a five day period in May capped by the Keep Punching 5K in 25:41 to end the month. Runner up Molly Sherwood ran the Ben Moore HM in early August in 2:17:05 and added the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K on the last weekend in 29:43.

Third place Ellen Hocheder ran the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 30:55. That was a minute faster then her GBMC Father's Day 5K the week before. She would need that as Andrea Hess was not far behind racing two 5Ks in August, including the TCRR Race for the Cause 5K in 31:04. Fifth place Muffet Chatteron was second at the Annapolis 10 Miler in 1:51:40.
