HCA 8K 24:53, 10K = 31:36

Etaferahu Temesgen gained one precious second ahead of Susanna Sullivan at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M to win the division with 54:30. She was barely better at the Twilight 8K when she again defeated Sullivan; this time 26:34 to 26:44, while setting the course record. Fourth place Christine Ramsey was next there in 27:27 though she had her best race winning it all at Pike’s Peek in 24:42 ahead of seventh place Julia Roman-Duval’s 35:05.

Temesgen added a fine runner-up placement at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge HM in 1:12:44. Her third overall at the Virginia 10M in 54:54 was just behind the time of 54:50 that third place Kerri Gallagher ran at the Army ten miler. Gallagher had started the year at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K in 40:59 and finished at the Veterans Day 10K on top with 33:50.

Also at Army was top master, sixth place Perry Shoemaker 58:07 as well as eight place Samantha Diehl (58:40), ninth place former champion Tezata Dengersa (58:44), and tenth place Amy Laskowske (58:48). Claire Hallissey won it all at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile that was enough to edge Ramsey in the spring but not for the year and she is close behind in fifth. Twelfth place Amy Hemenway was third at the Parkway in 59:36. Hallissey added a Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 58:18 that was well off last year’s 55:51 that won her the division. Kara Waters moved into eleventh place winning the Palio Di Siena 5K in 17:02.

Twenty-five of the top 74 runners came from other divisions.

35-39 Women

Palio Di Siena 5K 17:03, 10K = 35:30

Kara Waters ran just five races but a 39 she will be the next big masters threat in 2015. She capped her spring that began with a 1:00:21 at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M with a division leading Palio Di Siena 5K in 17:03. In the fall she added a time that has been fast enough to win at the Marine Corps Marathon in some years (2:52:33).

Maria Elena Calle Moved into the runner-up spot with the second fastest 5K at the Pony Pasture 5K in 17:33, bolstering that with another overall at the Richmond Jingle Bell 5K for Arthritis in 17:42. Fourth place Sherry Stick is used to winning and she did so overall in fourteen of her sixteen races. Her best race was the Donut Alley Rally 5K in 17:39. Her next two best races were mere age group wins, including the Frederick HM in 1:22:17.

By the narrowest of margins Lindsay Wilkins moves past her into third place. Wilkins ran the Woodrow Wilson Bridge HM in 1:21:53 just behind Calle’s Patrick Henry HM in 1:21:41. But Wilkins also finished ahead of Waters at the Marine Corps Marathon in 2:52:20 as well as beating her at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K 36:47 to 36:53. The best four times from Wilkins were ahead of Stick’s second best race.

The next three were also very close. Melissa Rittenhouse won at Army in 1:03:08, virtually identical to Trish Stone who ran Pike’s Peek earlier in the year in 37:55. Seventh place Rachel Northup ran the HCA 8K in 29:55. Stone added a third overall at the Parks HM in 1:25:16 while Rittenhouse was faster at the Anthem Shamrock Festival HM in 1:24:13. Northup added the frostbite 15K in 58:50, second overall.

Twenty-four women qualified for the division.

40-44 Women

Army 10 Miler 58:07, 10K = 34:56

Perry Shoemaker struck first with a victory at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K in 44:17. Barb Fallon-Wallace had 8 of the top 11 times but her Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 29:02 and her Jingle All the Way 8K in 28:54, still left her a stride or two behind. In September she bolted ahead at the National Press Club Beat the Deadline 5K in 17:15 with an overall win. Then came a showdown at the Army 10 miler. Unfortunately, it was a tough run, sixth best race for Fallon-Wallace in 1:01:36, just ahead of Shoemaker’s third best race, an overall win at the Perfect 10 ten mile in 1:01:40. At Army Shoemaker was golden racing home in a masters record 58:07.

Third place Brenda Schrank had a nice Apple Blossom 10K in 38:23 and two half marathons slightly faster than Kelly Westlake ran at the Frederick HM (1:25:32). When they met at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, Schrank confirmed her placement winning 1:02:15 to 1:03:58.

Fifth place Yoko England ran to very good half marathons, including a third overall at the Peroni Crawlin' Crab in 1:26:15. Sixth place Jennifer Quarles was second overall at the Red, White, and Blue 5K in 19:02. Seventh place Jen Sober had an identical 19:02 for third overall at the Lisa's Run 5K. That seems close but Quarles had the next 19 fastest times before Sober’s second best race.

Thirty-one women qualified for the division.

Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler 30:24, 10K = 38:20

The challenging RRCA 10 Mile helped decide four of the top runners with head-to-head. Even with home course advantage the year’s champion Denise Knickman had her third best 10 miler there in 1:07:59. Sixth place Keary Johnston was next in 1:09:20 ahead of Robyn Humphrey’s 1:09:41 but Humphrey had already earned the fourth spot with her win at the Celtic Solstice 5M in 32:57. Eighth place Linda O’Connor was fourth at the RRCA in 1:10:12.

By April, Humphrey had become a grand master and Knickman added another race to her best five of the division, finishing second at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:05:55. Then three weeks later, she capped her year winning at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 39:27. Paula Pels was coming off a Lions Roar 5K overall win in 20:20 that would have left her in eighth place. In Rockville, she laid down the hammer to finish second behind Knickman in 40:53 and take the runner-up spot.

Third place Rebecca Nathan had two swift 5Ks, including an overall win at the Community Residences 5K in 19:52. Debbie McLaughlin edges past Keary for the fifth spot with three swift 5Ks all top three overall, including the Sentara Sleighbell 5K in 20:01. Seventh place Kellie Redmond was not far behind racing the Kentland 5K in 20:09.

Qualified runners that made the rankings dropped 25 per cent to thirty-five.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:02:48, 10K =37:44

Cindy Conant was again completely unstoppable. She seems to get faster every year. Four of her races were faster than last year’s best, including a victory at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:02:48 three and half minutes faster than last year. She won all twenty of her races, including two overall wins, nine times third overall or better. Third place Robyn Humphrey was closest to her at the ten miler with 1:07:16. Eleven of her races were major races.

Conant powered her way to victory at Pike’s Peek in 38:08 well clear of fourth place Pamela Lovett who ran an open class 40:26. Indeed all but one of Conant’s races were elite division qualifiers. Runner-up Tata Kendall moved up two places from last year, winning the Charlottesville 4M in 25:08. She added the Pepsi 10K in 40:39. Lovett had race the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 41:40. Humphrey added the Remembrance 5K in 20:20.

Eleanor Kerr edges Karla Havens for fifth place with her Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:10:22. It was ever so slightly slower than the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 42:14 by Havens. However Kerr added Pike’s Peek in 42:20 as well as two other races well ahead of Havens’ next best race the Yorktown 8M in 56:31.

Forty-four women qualified for the division.

Army 10 Mile 1:16:06, 10K = 45:44

Betty Blank took on the big races all year long and was tops in all but three of her 22 races. She improved on her season opening American Family Fitness HM in 1:45:17 in May at the Alexandria Running Festival HM to 1:43:04. In between those two she raced a great Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:17:36 and the Pike’s Peek 10K in 46:22. She finished the year with her best race, the Army 10 mile in 1:16:06 that would have qualified her for the 40-44 division.

Runner-up Barbra Mathewson started quickly at the VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 48:22. She would add the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 47:38 to confirm her spot. Third place Dru Sexton was first master at the Star City HM in 1:07:25. Lydia Johnson came up big at the Bel Air Town Run in 23:31 to close on fourth place Linda Gulick. Gulick was champion 12 times, including the HCA 8K in 38:35 and the First Day 5K in 23:40. She had five races faster than Johnson’s second entry the Harford Hounds 4M in 31:16.

Sixth place Maria Shields ran the Cherry Pit 10M in 1:23:07. Ann Rosenthal was on her heels that same morning, racing the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:23:37. Ninth place Ginny Hughes ran the Veterans Day 10K in 50:21. Eighth place Marcy Foster tied her exactly winning the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler in 31:27, breaking the tie with the next three best races.

Forty three women made the rankings.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:16:45, 10K = 46:07

Alice Franks had a field day winning all thirty races she entered. Half of her races qualified her to be ranked in a division twenty years younger than hers. She raced more most of her races at major events and the rest at MCRRC club races. She ran from short (Kentlands 5K in 23:05) to long (Marine Corps Marathon 3:54:07). She was best at the Cherry Blossom winning in 1:16:45 and at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 46:14.

After Franks, Betty Brothers had four of the top five races including the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 10M in 1:25:11 well ahead of fourth place Marge Burley’s Annapolis ten miler in 1:27:09, Brothers was much closer to Larue Lennon at the 5K with her Memorial Scholarship 5K in 24:49. Lennon’s race was the Billy Korrow Memorial 5K in 24:50. When Lennon busted a fine St. Michael's Run Festival Half Marathon in 1:51:53 even Brothers’ fancy Elizabeth River Run 10K in 51:17 was not enough to stop Lennon from seizing the runner-up spot.

The next three places were razor close. Freyda Greenberg is seventh. Her best race at Veterans Day in 53:15 narrowly won over Ann Rosenthal’s Park HM in 1:57:47 for fall. For the whole year they swapped places as Rosenthal’s third best race at the Twilight 8K in 42:28 was faster than Greenberg’s second race, the Race for a Cause 8K in 42:37. Meanwhile Laurel Clement had led in spring with her Police Week 5K in 25:34 and pushes past Greenberg for sixth with her PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler in 33:32.

Thirty-six women qualified for the division.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:27:19, 10K = 52:28

Many times an elite racer joins the division and stands all by themselves. Dee Nelson mauled her way to the top with easily the top 25 times. She finished more than six minutes, nearly a mile, ahead of her top competition. Her MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K in 57:15 stood as the best 10K for the whole year and it was her 24th best race. She won the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:27:19. She had five sub 26:00 5Ks with her best being the Keep Punching 5K in Towson at 25:41.

Mary Kate Berglund was again the runner-up in the division. It was not so easy this year. Her best race at the Collaborate to Eradicate 5K in 28:11 was not a huge lead over third place Andrea Hess who ran the Travis Mannion 5K in 28:31. Berglund also ran the Ashland Railroad 10K in 1:01:11 for her third best race. Fourth place Molly Sherwood was close by winning at the Race for our Kids 10K in 1:01:21.

Like Nelson, tenth place Jeanette Novak races more than fifty times a year and she was tops in 22 of those races.

Ecris Williams joined the division and pulled away from the field with 17 of the top 18 times. She a ten miler and two 10Ks among the six races raced faster than a 1:03:00 10K pace. Her best three races were 5Ks, all faster then thirty minutes, including the Run Your Heart Out 5K in 29:49. Last year’s champion Tami Graf still races more than fifty times a year, winning 28 age group prizes. Her best race started the year at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K in 1:18:57. Third place Janet Hughes was fastest at the wacky distance Run Through History 3.83M in 40:37. Nancy Fraser was the last real challenger for the title. She raced the Charlottesville 10 Mile in 1:51:56.

Her fastest race was the McDaniel Pi Run, slightly longer than a 5K and run on the track. Her slowest race was her shortest qualifier, the Hashawa 2.86 mile cross country journey that may have been her most impressive race. Pat Eden was fastest at the Red, White, and Blue 5K in 47:57. Martha Trimmer ran her best as the year ended in her only non-5K race, the Across the Bay 10K.
