This race was created by Michael Wardian and is conducted by the Tidal Basin Running Club. Fifty runners attempted to run 211 laps on a 200m indoor track in order to cover the official Olympic marathon distance (which is normally run outside on city streets.) The air conditioning of the gym was appreciated on a humid hot day.

A note about the timing of this indoor event. We used a Jaguar transponder timing system that is ordinarily designed for outdoor events. To prepare for this event, we conducted a full scale dress rehearsal in the Thomas Jefferson gym to develop an antenna positioning that would only read runners at the timing point without getting stray reads from the opposite side of the track.

So, we asked runners to wear their transponders on their left hips, and four antennas were positioned facing outward from the track infield. This configuration creates the possibility of missing a runner if another runner blocks his view of the antennas, but with only 50 runners, this was not a significant problem. The system read transponders a total of 161,160 times during the race and sorted that data into individual lap times for each runner. This is a difficult task because some runners stopped at the refreshment table that was in front of the timing point or at the bleechers to get their own supplies. Some runners actually walked back and forth through the timing point between to gain access to their supplies on the bleechers, which our operators tried to manually remove.

Our manual backup timers did heroic work capturing individual splits by hand as well. They were also challenged to find all runners in a group. Some lap counters actually ran with their last athlete as the race came to a close. We are still comparing the manual timing sheets to the computer generated ones and will post the full times for all laps shortly.

Although at least two people entered the race with the hopes of setting an overall world indoor record, the only record set was by Christopher M Crawford who set the record for the fastest indoor marathon ever run while wearing a kilt. We also believe that Barry Goldmeier set the world record for the fastest indoor marathon run while juggling 4 balls.
