Revised preliminary results. This is the fourth year for the marathon and the first year that a 50K was added. Although no official "records" are kept for these indoor events, we believe that a number of all-time bests were run today. Michael Wardian set a new world best time for the 50K. Several age group best times were also set. The race was timed with a Jaguar transponder system with video cameras and manual lap sheets as backups. Seventeen people ran the 50K and 34 people ran just the marathon, with both races going concurrently on the same track. Because USATF Rule 262(3)(c) allows a race director to give ultramarathoners several options to compete, with each considered to be a bona fide scratch competition, runners were allowed to switch between the 50K and the marathon during the event. We are providing the race results with each group listed separately and the combination of marathon times for both groups. The race was organized by the Tidal Basin Run Club, which offered a $100 cash prize each to the male and female winner, $50 to second and third, PLUS a $100 bonus each to the male or female winner for a world best time. Runners and spectators were updated by printed results posted every half hour and also by a TV monitor displaying runners split times and lap counts. Announcer Chuck Williams offer running commentary and music during the race. At the race, a petition addressed to USATF and the BAA was circulated seeking to make the indoor marathon and the indoor 50K events for which official national records would be kept. The petition also sought to make indoor marathon times eligible to be Boston Qualifying races. Race Director Bob Platt wishes to that James Moreland and Pat Brown for the electronic timing, Liza Recto for coordinating the lap counters and James Scarbrough for coordinating the registration and the aid station. Jay Wind booked the venue and did the pre-race publicity. Georgetown Running Company supplied the Nuun and had a product demonstration table at the event. 50K FinishersPlace Name GenderAge Hometown Bib Total 1 Michael Wardian M 39 Arlington VA 1 03:12:13 2 Brian P.
