Two Races Combine on Oct. 21

In the spirit of Uniting America, two of the DC area's favorite races combine into one on Sunday, October 21, in Washington DC.

START's 7th Annual Pennsylvania Avenue Mile "Booking for Literacy" on Sunday, October 21, at 8:30 am at 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue (Archives/Navy Memorial Metro Station) features Olympians, World Champions, and top local athletes competing for $14,000 in cash prizes and hundreds of other prizes.

After the mile races, Vanguard Foundation's 6th Annual National RUN FOR RECOVERYŽ five-kilometer (3.1-mile) race at 10 am features the East Coast's best distance runners, including Kensington 8k winner Chris Banks and two-time Marine Marathon winner Darrell General. Runners in the 5K compete for $4,800 in cash prizes, including cash awards by five-year age group -- the first time cash awards have ever gone to all age groups.

Senators, Congressmen, and Presidential appointees participate both in the mile and the 5K. Both events are open to adults and children of all ages and levels of ability. The 10 one-mile races culminate with the elite mile at 9:50 am. Last year's winner Leonard Mucheru, the first person ever to break the four- minute mile in Washington DC, running 3:59.2, is back to defend his title.

The Pennsylvania Avenue Mile benefits SummerTime and Reading Together (START), a DC-based children's literacy program that creates and promotes reading programs all over the DC area, recognized as one of the Bush I administation's Thousand Points of Light.

The 5K benefits START and Vanguard Foundation, a leader in drug addiction recovery with 10 treatment programs in the DC area, the DC area's largest event of National Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Recovery Month.

Originally, START's Pennsylvania Avenue Mile and 5K Chaser were scheduled for September 15, and Vanguard Foundation's National RUN FOR RECOVERYŽ was scheduled for September 16 as part of National Recovery Month. Both were postponed, however, after the tragic events on September 11.

START's Pennsylvania Avenue Mile is sponsored by CareFirst, Washington-Baltimore 2012 Regional Coalition, Fannie Mae (Foundation?), Grafik, and the DC Sports Commission.

Vanguard's National RUN FOR RECOVERYŽ is sponsored by Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services), CITA Biomedical, Partnership for Recovery, Virginia Commerce Bank, American Service Center, National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency, Lockheed Martin, and Drug Enforcement Administration Museum and Visitor Center, and dozens of local restaurants, supermarkets, and sporting goods stores.
