PVTC Track Meet #2
Langley High School, McLean, VA
Sunday, June 1, 2003
Conducted by Potomac Valley Track Club
The competition wasn't
anything close to what it was on June 1st, but a surprise visit by Alan Webb
and his gang made things a lot more interesting. Richard Smith, 20, was
attempting to use this race, which was a USATF sanctioned meet, to run a
national qualifying time in the 800 meters. It was treated as a "last chance"
meet. The 800 meters, without a doubt, was the event of the meet. The Alan
Webb Race started off at a blistering pace, 25 seconds at the 200 meter mark,
and coming through at the quarter at 51 with Alan in the lead. The back
stretch saw Alan still lead with Richard Smith on his toes and the other 3
competitors well off pace. The leaders hit the 600 meter mark at 1:17 and
Alan, having done his pacing duties, dropped of the track to let Smith go at
it alone. Everyone stood clapping and cheering in unison as the race director
counted down every second of the last 100 meters, as though we were at a
shuttle launch. Unfortunately, Richard came up shy of his goal, but received a
huge applause nonetheless for his efforts.
Alan Webb completed his celebrity-like appearance with a 400 meter leg in 50
point.
There was controversy with the start of the 200 meters, where other elite
competitors were attempting to make it to nationals with a qualifying time.
"He shot the gun before we were even set," a runner in the 200m claimed. The
times run were 21.81, 22.36, 22.96 respectively by a "no card," who expressed
his displeasure with the officiating, Aaron Hayes, and Derrick Golden.
Aaron Hayes also turned in the PVTC's first sub-11 second performance this
season on route to a victory in the 100m over Derrick Golden.
The field events also turned in top marks of the 2003 PVTC season.
The mile and 3000 meters were won by Ted Poulos with Nathaniel McVey-Finney
giving a valiant effort in the 3000m and Steven Ablondi with an impressive
last lap kick in the mile.
