Virginia RRCA Announces 2006 Awards

At the Virginia State Meeting of the Road Runners Club of America held on Saturday, October 28, three long-time contributors to the commonwealth's running community were honored.

Rick Platt is the Virginia Outstanding Club President for 2006. Platt is the President of the Colonial Road Runners in Williamsburg, and has served in a leadership capacity at the club for two decades. Platt is also a frequent contributor to various running publications and serves a number of races as Promotion Director or Elite Athlete Coordinator.

Brian Sagedy is the Virginia Outstanding Race Director for 2006 in recognition of his leadership of the Elizabeth River Run 10K in Portsmouth and the Neptune Festival 8K in Virginia Beach. Sagedy is a member of the Tidewater Striders running club. Among his accomplishments, Sagedy supervised the relocation of the 27-year old Elizabeth River Run from Norfolk to Portsmouth.

Robert Thurston is the Virginia Oustanding Volunteer for 2006. Thurston is the Virginia course certifier measuring or supervising the measuring of road race courses in the commonwealth. For 21 years, Thurston has been co- director of the National Capital 20 Mile Run, as well as its predecessor 36- mile ultramarathon. Thurston is also the co-director of the Bread Run 10K. Thurston is a member of the DC Road Runners Club.

"We are proud of how much these three runners have given back to the running community," said Robert Platt, VA RRCA State Representative. "They are representative of the caliber of running club volunteers throughout the state."
